Fans Fret as Last Home Game For Derek Jeter Could End in Washout
Tickets currently selling for as much as $15,000.
-- Yankee fans are on pins and needles waiting to hear if one of the biggest games of the year could be a washout.
After a 22-year career with the New York Yankees, Derek Jeter is scheduled to play his final home game on Thursday night. However, a forecast that calls for rain is threatening to ruin the party.
Since the Yankees haven’t made the playoffs this year, Jeter will likely never again get to play at Yankee Stadium if the game is cancelled.

In anticipation of Jeter's last game, fans have been buying tickets for far more than the normal price. Currently, tickets on StubHub range from about $300 to as high as $15,225 for infield grandstand tickets.
Matt Stypulkoski, who lives in New Jersey, paid a relatively “cheap” $300 for his tickets in the right field bleachers earlier this year. He said the price is much more than he had ever paid for Yankee tickets before, but Stypulkoski he knew he had to be at Jeter’s last game.
“He has been the captain of the Yankees since I was a toddler,” said Stypulkoski, who worked extra shifts to pay for the tickets. “He had so many incredible moments wearing a Yankee uniform.”
With Jeter’s final home game threatened by rain, Stypulkoski’s attention remains firmly fixed on the weather report.
“I keep checking the weather every twenty to thirty minutes. I hope the weather man doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” he said.
Stypulkowski remains optimistic about getting to see the game and said he’s planning on showing up to the stadium no matter what and is prepared to stay even if the first pitch isn't thrown out until late in the evening.
“I’ll gladly stay 'till four in the morning,” said Stypulkowski. “[I’ll do] whatever it takes.”
Fans aren’t the only ones worrying about the game.
MLB commissioner Bud Selig talked about the possibility of a washout with reporters on Tuesday, saying: "I'm told the weather forecast for Thursday isn't all that bad, and the rain should be out of here. But I am worried about it, and I'll continue to worry about it. The commissioner can control a lot of things, but, damn it, all the weather isn't one of them.”
If the game is officially canceled, tickets purchased on Stubhub will be refunded and those purchased from the official Yankees Ticketmaster site will be able to be redeemed at any other Yankees game within the next 12 months. However, if Major League Baseball decides the game is complete after five or more innings, then ticket holders will be out of luck even if they didn’t get to see Jeter play all nine innings for the final time at home.
