Oculus Rift Consumer Headset: Get the First Look

Oculus headset unveiled today, will ship with Xbox controller.

— -- The world got its first look at the Oculus Rift consumer headset today as the Facebook-owned company revealed new details about what gamers can expect when the first units ship early next year.

In addition to investing $10 million in the creation of games, Oculus is also working on Oculus Touch. A prototype of the controllers, which wrap around a player's hands, were also shown at the event today.

The wireless controllers will allow players to pick up objects in their virtual worlds and also detect communicative gestures to enhance the gaming experience.

It's set to be a huge year for Oculus, which was acquired by Facebook last year for $2 billion. Last month, Oculus announced in a blog post it had acquired Surreal Vision, a company focused on constructing real-world scenes in a virtual space.

It was also announced last month that pre-orders for the consumer version of the virtual reality goggles will begin later this year, with the first customers will be able to strap on the eyewear in the comfort of their own homes beginning in the first quarter of 2016.
