Oculus Rift Ready to Bring Virtual Reality to the Masses

The Facebook-owned company has opened its pre-orders to everyone.

— -- Facebook acquired Oculus for $2 billion -- and now the social network’s big bet on virtual reality is finally coming to fruition today as pre-orders begin for Oculus Rift consumer headsets.

Priced at $599 and with a limit of one per customer, the first headsets have an expected ship date of May 2016, according to the Oculus website.

The consumer headset will ship with a wireless Xbox One controller and adapter to enhance the gaming experience, along with two games -- "EVE: Valkyrie" and "Lucky’s Tale."

Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe said last year that Oculus will work with Windows 10, making it easy for gamers to jump-start their experiences and stream their existing games to Oculus.
