Bail Set at $30 Million for Accused Jaycee Dugard Kidnapper

District attorney pleads for Jaycee Dugard's privacy.

Sept. 14, 2009— -- Bail was set today at $30 million for the man accused of the rape and kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard.

Phillip and Nancy Garrido appeared in court speaking only briefly when agreeing to waive their right to a speedy hearing.

Phillip Garrido's bail was set at $30 million and he was ordered to under go psychiatric evaulation, which District Attorney Vern Pierson called "very common." Nancy Garrido's attorney declined to request bail.

Both have pleaded not guilty to a total of 28 charges each.

Pierson said during a news conference on the case today that he was dismayed that Dugard and her family had begun to be treated like property "to be had."

"I think they need to be left alone for a little bit of time," he said. "They have a lot to deal with right now."

Pierson wouldn't say if Dugard would need to take the stand once the Garridos went to trial, but that "typically in every criminal case ... ultimately a witness would have to come to court and testify."

He noted that the case would be like any other they'd seen in the area and that, after doing research, authorities were confident it would not be hampered by any statutes of limitation.

"I don't think anyone has handled a case quite like this," Pierson said.

Family Reunion a Mix of Joy and Horror

Jaycee Dugard's return has turned into a simultaneous celebration and horror story. Authorities say she was snatched off the street near the school bus stop and kept for 18 years in the Garridos' backyard labyrinth, hidden in a series of sheds and tents.

Though just feet from nearby neighbors, Jaycee eventually bore two daughters by Phillip Garrido, 11 and 15, and was held hostage by Nancy Garrido for five months when her husband was jailed on parole violations in 1993, just two years after Dugard was kidnapped.

Carl Probyn, Dugard's stepfather who witnessed the kidnapping but was unable to stop it, has told ABC News that Dugard appears to be in good health and is unusually young looking for a woman of 29.

Dugard is said to be very bright and a whiz with computers, despite her education being cut off at 11 years old. He praised Dugard for educating her own daughters as best she could.

Dugard and her daughters have remained secluded with her mother, Terry Probyn. She's been visited by her aunt and her half-sister who was just a year old with Dugard was kidnapped.
