Do You Think 12th Grade Isn't Necessary?
"World News" wants to hear what you think.
Feb. 16, 2010 -- Utah state Sen. Chris Buttars has proposed eliminating the 12th grade in order to save the state $60 million a year.
Supporters say many students squander senior year anyway, having finished their graduation requirements and gotten their college acceptance letters in the mail. With more students graduating early, supporters say, the students would remain motivated and the state could start to chip away at its $700 million debt.
But a chorus of critics says 12th grade is necessary. It includes some students, who say they do not want to miss out on their senior year.
School officials say early graduation is already an option for high school students across the nation. Buttars also has said he would add incentives for students to opt out of the 12th grade.
