— -- Like many actresses her age, Lucy Hale auditioned for "50 Shades of Grey."

She may have lost out to Dakota Johnson, but she's talking about what it was like to try out for the part of Anastasia Steele.

"Let's just say I don’t want my grandmother watching that audition tape," she told MTV. "[It was] awkward."

Hale, 25, who stars in the ABC Family series, "Pretty Little Liars," said that the reading for "50 Shades" was "unlike any audition I'd ever done before in my life."

"It was just me. It was a two-page monologue of ... exactly what you think it would be," she said. "Very uncomfortable."

"It was sort of one of those things where you just had to go with it or you're gonna look lame," she added. "Hopefully, I didn't look lame!"

Still, Hale took the audition seriously and had been hoping to get it. According to her, it was a well-sought-after role.

"I think any girl in my demographic would have loved to be a part of it,” Hale said. “Mainly, I was just interested in doing something risky and doing something a little different than my character on ‘PLL’ so it took me out of my comfort zone.”
