Shakira proudly shows off course certificate from Univ. of Pennsylvania
The singer is outspoken about her belief in the power of education.
Shakira is an international star, a businesswoman and a mother-of-two, but she is still finding time to further her education.
The singer revealed on Instagram that she completed University of Pennsylvania's "Ancient Philosophy: Plato & His Predecessors" four-week course in a post featuring her certificate on Thursday.
"I know... my hobbies are very impractical, but it took a lot of hours after the kids were asleep," she wrote in the caption of her post. "Thank you Plato and predecessors for all the "fun" over the past month!"
According to the online philosophy course's description, the class "traces the origins of philosophy in the Western tradition in the thinkers of Ancient Greece," and takes approximately 17 hours to complete.
Shakira's husband, professional soccer player Gerard Piqué, shared a video of her studying in March.
"Studying philosophy! Smart a--! #stayhome," he wrote in the caption of his post. She reposted his video with the message, "Just a benign ancient philosophy course at @Penn to make the confinement productive. I have to be able to think about other things rather than Paw Patrol!!"
The singer previously took at course on ancient Western History at UCLA in 2007, according to The Associated Press.
She also supports education in her philanthropy work as well, creating the Pies Descalzos Foundation in 1997 to help underprivileged children get access to education and more opportunities in Colombia.
"We seek to contribute to the quality challenges of educational infrastructure, teaching and innovation processes that are currently facing Colombia and Latin America," the organization's mission statement reads.
In December 2019, the organization announced a 3-year partnership with Education Above All Foundation to bring 54,000 children in Colombia access to education.
Shakira also has a US-based nonprofit, The Barefoot Foundation, to support increasing learning opportunities for children.
