A Journey Through the American Frontier

The award-winning documentary film "Unbranded" is about four young Cowboys who adopt, train, and ride a string of wild mustangs 3,000 miles from Mexico to Canada through the American West. According to the filmmakers, the trip became an epic journey of self-discovery, tested friendships, and iconic landscapes. During the ride, the filmmakers photographed their progress in photos along their journey. Pictured here, the "Unbranded" crew rides through Utah high atop the Wasatch Plateau.

According to Ben Masters, "Approximately 58,000 wild horses and burros live on public Bureau of Land Management land in the American West. The Appropriate Management Level, the number of horses the land can sustain with livestock and wildlife taken into consideration, is only 26,000. An additional 50,000 wild horses and burros have been gathered off the rangeland and currently live in government pens or leased private pastures. The horses used during the 'Unbranded' ride came from these holding pens."
