Dianne Feinstein was elected to the Senate in 1992 and was the longest-serving female senator, the first ranking woman on the Senate Judiciary Committee and the first woman chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. A native of San Francisco, she became the first female mayor in 1978 following the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk. She worked on legislation for gun control, legalizing gay marriage, the national AMBER alert system, along with environmental issues such as drought and combating wildfires. She died at the age of 90 on Sept. 28.
