Which Celebrities Are Single, Engaged and Expecting in 2011?
John Mellencamp said to be leaning on Meg Ryan since split with wife Elaine.
Jan. 3, 2011 -- It's a new year -- and for many celebrities, already the masters of reinvention, that means a new life.
Last year ended with a flurry of engagements, surprising splits and pregnancy shockers. Too many to keep up with? Not to worry. Here's your celebrity status primer for 2011.
Who's Single?
John Mellencamp
Heartland rockerJohn Mellencamp was the last celebrity of 2010 to announce his divorce.
On Dec. 30, the 59-year-old singer of "Jack and Diane" and "Hurts So Good" revealed that he and his wife of 18 years, model Elaine Mellencamp (nee Irwin), were splitting up.
"John and Elaine Mellencamp are proud of their 20 years together and are very happy with their accomplishments both as parents and as a family. They will continue to raise their two children in Indiana but have decided to call it a day as a couple," their spokesman said in a statement last Thursday.
Now, the New York Post is reporting that Mellencamp may be seeking comfort from new friend Meg Ryan. The singer and actress have been spotted at Mellencamp's recent concerts.
According to the Post's gossip column, the pair was seen walking arm-in-arm in New York last October, and Ryan has shown up backstage at several Mellencamp concerts on his most recent tour.
Perhaps Ryan is providing counsel to Mellencamp, having gone through her own public split from husband Dennis Quaid in 2001.
Or maybe it's just business. Mellencamp has been working on a musical, "Ghost Brothers of Darkling County," which stars Ryan.
Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds
In December, one of Hollywood's sexiest couples, Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds, called it quits.
"After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage," the couple said in a statement released by Reynolds' publicist. "We entered our relationship with love, and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."
Johansson, 26, started dating Reynolds, 34, in 2007. The couple announced their engagement in May 2008 and married that September in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens
Four years after meeting on the set of "High School Musical," young golden couple Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens ended their relationship.
Efron, 23, had recently spoken about his love for 22-year-old Hudgens, saying it was "exactly how it should be. It's real."
Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter
Michael C. Hall and his wife, Jennifer Carpenter, who met on the set of the cable series "Dexter," where they played brother and sister, announced in December that their two-year marriage was over, "having been separated for some time."
Liz Hurley
Also in December, Liz Hurley announced that she had separated months before from husband Arun Nayar after a U.K. tabloid published a picture of the 45-year-old actress-model kissing Australian cricket player Shane Warne.
"Not a great day," Hurley wrote on her Twitter page. "For the record, my husband Arun & I separated a few months ago. Our close family & friends were aware of this."
Eva Longoria
In her short three-year marriage to basketball star Tony Parker, "Desperate Housewives" star Eva Longoria battled rumors of infidelity.
Perhaps it all became too much. In November, the couple filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing "irreconcilable differences."
Charlie Sheen
It didn't come as much of a surprise when Charlie Sheen announced his divorce from second wife Brooke Mueller in November.
After all, Sheen, the "Two and Half Men" star, had been mostly estranged from his wife since he allegedly assaulted her last Christmas.
Just days before filing the divorce petition, Sheen was briefly hospitalized after New York police reported finding him "emotionally disturbed" in a hotel room. The room was reportedly trashed after Sheen spent a wild night with a porn star -- harkening back to the actor's bachelor days.
Christina Aguilera
In October, singer Christina Aguilera, 29, announced she was ending her five-year marriage to music executive Jordan Bratman.
"When you're unhappy in your marriage, your children are the ones who suffer," she said. "That's the last thing I wanted for my son."
Aguilera seems to be finding comfort with production assistant Matt Rutler, whom she met on the set of her first film "Burlesque," She has already introduced him to her 2-year-old son, Max.
Courteney Cox and David Arquette
Last October will be remembered as a busy month for breakups. That month, Cox and her husband, actor David Arquette, also called it quits after 11 years of marriage.
Arquette, 39, seemed to be taking it harder. After sharing revealing details about his relationship with Cox, including that they weren't having sex, he told Howard Stern that he was having a nervous breakdown.
Cox, 46, meanwhile, was said to be having a more-than-professional relationship with Brian Van Holt, 40, her co-star on her ABC comedy "Cougar Town."
Who's Engaged?
There was also plenty of good news at the end of last year -- and there looks to be several celebrity weddings to look forward to this year.
Reese Witherspoon
Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon has rebounded after her split from actor Jake Gyllenhaal.
She's engaged to Hollywood agent Jim Toth, 44, and the two are "extremely happy," Witherspoon's representatives told Us Weekly magazine on Dec. 28, 2010.
The pair began dating early this year after Witherspoon's split from Gyllenhaal. This will be the second marriage for the actress. She and actor Ryan Phillippe divorced in 2008 after seven years as a couple. They have two kids together, Ava and Deacon.
Natalie Portman
Not only is Natalie Portman engaged to choreographer Benjamin Millepied, she is expecting her first child, her rep confirmed to ABC News.
Portman, 29, and Millepied, 32, met during the production of "Black Swan." Millepied, a principal dancer in the New York City Ballet, choreographed the film, which has earned Portman nominations for Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards.
The notoriously private Portman has been linked to Millepied, a classically trained ballet dancer who was born in France, since early this year, when gossip sites began reporting that the pair started quietly dating last fall.
LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian
Two days after Christmas, multi-Grammy award-winning singer LeAnn Rimes and actor Eddie Cibrian announced their engagement.
"Thank you for all your well wishes!! We are extremely excited and look forward to a beautiful future. It's been an incredible last few days, I was shocked!!! We are blessed, our families are so happy and our lives are filled with love," Rimes wrote on her Twitter page.
Rimes and Cibrian met last year on the set of their made-for-TV movie, "Northern Lights." The movie received more publicity for its off-screen drama than its on-screen plot, when rumors spread that Rimes, who was then married to dancer Dean Sheremet, was having an affair with Cibrian, who was also married and had two children with model Brandi Glanville.
"The truth is that we're human beings. ... We make mistakes and we learn from them, but we're human. We fell in love," Cibrian told ABC News' Robin Roberts.
Bret Michels
After 16 years and two children together, rocker Bret Michaels finally proposed to Kristi Lynn Gibson during the finale of "Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It" on VH1.
Down on one knee, the Poison frontman told Gibson: "Please say yes or the rejection will kill me right now."
Gibson, who is mother to their two daughters, Raine Elizabeth and Jorja Bleu Sychak, stayed by Michaels' side earlier this year when he suffered a brain hemorrhage and subsequent stroke.
"She's the one who put up with me all these years," Michaels told US Weekly about his bride-to-be 16 years in the making.
Who's Expecting?
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon
In December, Nick Cannon let the bump out of the bag: He and wife Mariah Carey are expecting twins.
Cannon broke the news on his radio show. "Everything is A-OK! Both babies are healthy and in tip-top shape," he told his listeners.

Pink
Singer Pink is expecting her first child with husband dirt bike racer Carey Hart.
Pink, 31, announced her pregnancy on the Ellen DeGeneres show in November, confirming Internet rumors. Asked why she waited to speak out until now, Pink replied, "I didn't want to talk about it because I was just really nervous, and I have had a miscarriage before.
