New video shows an out-of-control driver speeding onto a Jersey City sidewalk, missing a man by inches.

On Feb. 9, suspect John Wilson was allegedly driving drunk when he swerved off Ocean Avenue onto the sidewalk, narrowly missing a man who had just lit a cigarette.

"It sounded like an explosion; like two trucks had collided," said witness Roxy Mumford.

Wilson’s Ford Taurus took out a light pole and continued to drive down the block, leaving what police say was “severe damage” to traffic lights, street signals, and several other vehicles. No one was injured in the crash.

"It was like a war zone," said Mumford. "Everything was knocked over."

Police say the 47-year-old driver lost control of his car and was charged with driving while intoxicated, criminal mischief, endangering welfare and presenting a fraudulent insurance ID card.
