“My speedometer isn’t working … and I’m coming to a red light,” said the 40-year-old mom from Sunland, Calif., to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dispatcher Richard Engerbach.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was driving with her 5-year-old daughter in the backseat when her accelerator became stuck. She could not stop her Ford Escort as it moved at approximately 20-25 mph on Foothill Boulevard in La Canada Flintridge, Calif.

She was approaching a busy intersection and was terrified that she would not be able to bring the vehicle to a stop in time.

Engerbach instructed her to put the car in neutral, turn off the ignition and turn on her hazard lights. She did and the car died, coming to a stop in the middle of the street before reaching the light.

“She did really good,” Engerbach told ABC News. ”She did what I asked her to do and prevented her vehicle from running another red light.

“There’s always a sense of nervousness depending on the type of call,” he said. “It’s our job to stay calm and try and get the people on the other end of the phone to remain calm so that we can give them the help that they need.”
