The Google Play store for Android phones and tablets is getting a visual and functional overhaul. The update will begin to roll out to devices today.

In a blog post about the refresh, Michael Siliski, group product manager for Google Play, wrote that the new design is "simple, clean and - most importantly - helps you find great entertainment, fast."

Moving away from the dark, tiled design, the new Play store looks to fall in line with Google's latest design efforts. Content including apps, music, movies, books and magazines is featured on larger, card elements against a light background a la Google Now, the company's smart search and real time personalized info app for Android.

Content should also be easier to find with new recommendations populating the Play store feed as users scroll. There's also a simplified checkout process so content can be enjoyed sooner.

This newest version of the Google play store for Android will be pushed to devices running Android Froyo (2.2) and above.
