Buffalo: Healing from Hate

As residents of Buffalo, New York, will commemorate Tuesday two years since a racially motivated mass shooting, the final design for a permanent memorial was unveiled.

"Two years ago a shadow fell over our beloved Buffalo,' Gov. Kathy Hochul said.

"It was a modern-day lynching," said Garnell Whitfield Jr.

Many have compared the shooting at the Buffalo, New York, supermarket as a “modern-day lynching.”

"We lost precious members of our community," said Mayor Byron Brown.

Plaintiffs claim the social media platforms played a role in the shooting.

In a first for the Biden administration, the Department of Justice is seeking the death penalty for the Buffalo supermarket mass shooter.

Gendron pleaded guilty on state charges of killing 10 people in May 2022.

The Justice Department cited the shooter's intentional infliction of bodily injury, intentional participation in an act resulting in death, and blatant racism associated with the shooting.

Payton Gendron has already been sentenced to life without parole in the state case, but he still faces 27 federal counts and for those the Department of Justice says he's eligible for execution.

The 20-year-old defendant was already sentenced to life in prison by New York state in the racially motivated mass shooting at a Buffalo supermarket.

Garnell Whitfield Jr. lost his 86-year-old mother, Ruth, in the shooting at Tops supermarket in Buffalo. He has since come out of retirement to advocate for systemic change and fight white supremacy.

"My mom loved us unconditionally," said Garnell Whitfield Jr.
