    Anissa Weier introduced Morgan Geyser to Slender Man fan fiction in Dec. 2013, according to the criminal complaint. Over the next few months, the two planned to kill a classmate to become his “proxies.” According to police, they agreed to stab the victim on May 30, Geyser’s 12th birthday, at a sleepover at her house. But plans changed.

    The Woods

    Geyser and Weier decided instead to attack their friend the next day in the woods nearby, telling her they would play hide-and-seek, according to court documents. Geyser and Weier then jumped the 12-year-old girl, took turns stabbing her multiple times with a knife and left her for dead, according to the police report.

    Geyser and Weier took off and began walking to find Slender Man, who they believed lived in the Nicolet National Forest. The victim, with 19 stab wounds, crawled from the woods to a nearby road, where bicyclist Greg Steinberg discovered her and called 911. “Yes, she's breathing,” he told the 911 operator.

    Arrested

    Hours after the stabbing, Geyser and Weier were arrested near an I-94 on-ramp. According to police, a knife was found in Geyser’s backpack. “Both suspects also had blood on their clothes,” Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack told “20/20.” The girls were charged as adults with attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

    The victim arrived at Waukesha Memorial Hospital and was rushed into surgery. Her 19 stab wounds covered her body. One wound, close to her heart, was particularly worrying. “If the knife had gone the width of a human hair further, she wouldn’t have lived,” the victim’s surgeon Dr. John Keleman told “20/20.”

    After a week in the hospital, the survivor returned home. Thousands of supporters from around the world sent her messages and donated to a fund set up to help with medical bills. “We did ask how she found the strength to crawl out of the woods,” her family wrote in a statement. “Her response was simple: ‘I wanted to live.'"

    On Aug.1, a judge declared Geyser incompetent to stand trial after two doctors testified on her mental state, saying she believes she talks to imaginary beings. Her next court date is Nov. 12. On Sept. 15, Anissa Weier’s attorney argued Weier was also mentally incompetent. A court-ordered psychologist is evaluating her before an Oct. 22 hearing.

Her parents return for the first time to the spot where their daughter was stabbed. “I hugged her and said you’re going to be OK,” the survivor’s mother Stacie Leutner told “20/20.” “She’s an amazing child,” she said. “She is definitely our hero,” her father Josef Leutner added.
