American Airlines Plunges Into Bankruptcy

Faced with high labor costs and rising prices for jet fuel, American Airlines parent company AMR filed today for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Once the world’s largest airline, American is deeply in the red, and in recent months its cash reserves have been falling. The company says labor contract rules force it to spend many millions of dollars more on operations than other airlines.

In a statement the carrier’s parent company announced plans to continue normal business operations as it seeks court protection to reduce costs and debt. American says flight schedules will be unchanged and its frequent flier program is not affected.

“The consumers, themselves, are probably not going to be affected that much; it’s going to be the employees that are really affected,” says airline analyst Denny Kelly in Fort Worth, Texas. He expects American to emerge from bankruptcy financially stronger than it is today.

What the American Airline bankruptcy could mean for you?

The nation’s third largest airline also says CEO Gerard Arpey will step down. He’s being replaced by Thomas Horton, currently the company’s president. AMR shares plunged 85 percent to just 25 cents each in trading this morning.

Flight operations may be reduced in the future. “Some of the destinations that are not very popular will be probably cut back or maybe eliminated,” says Kelly. Employee pay may be cut. “When they go in and file bankruptcy, then American can set the employee contracts anyway they want.”

American was the only major U.S. airline that didn’t seek bankruptcy protection after the 2001 terrorist attacks. Unlike most other carriers, American did not merge with a competitor, and it was the only major airline to lose money last year.

“American’s customers are always our top priority and they can continue to depend on us for the safe, reliable travel and high quality service they know and expect from us,” said Horton in a statement. “American serves 260 airports in more than 50 countries and territories, and we are committed to maintaining a strong presence in worldwide markets.”

The  Fort Worth,Texas-based company listed $24.7 billion in assets and $29.6 billion in debt in court papers filed today in New York.

AMR had losses of $162 million in the third quarter and $2.7 billion in the past year while the other major airlines posted profits. United Continental, the parent of United Airlines, the world’s largest carrier, had third-quarter profits of $653 million and US Airways made $76 million.

The airline had been in contract talks with unions representing its pilots, flight attendants and ground crews for more than four years.

Delta reorganized under chapter 11 and got labor union concessions in order to survive. That’s probably what AMR will do.

Congratulations AA, So happy to pay your bills for you. Sincerely, American Taxpayer. These Chapter 11 bankruptcy laws should be rewritten so these companies just can’t file on a whim.

Howdymo1; I don’t think I understand what you mean. The taxpayer is getting screwed by AMR filing chapter 11? How so?

“American was the only major U.S. airline that didn’t seek bankruptcy protection after the 2001 terrorist attacks.” We are so happy to learn that Southwest, JetBlue and AirTran are not Major Airlines!

They will probably just merge with another airline. AA has been on a steady decline for a long time. They should be allowed to fail, though.

Ok this is a Union issue agian. I am not anti-union. I am anti-stupid. Unions that yell give me, give me, give me are stupid when your company goes bankrupt an your Union member loss thier jobs everyone losses. When will Unions learn that there are other things besides money that works need. I have respect for the Unions that see that the company is in trouble and works with them to save it. But some Unions just do not care and those will kill the country.

I wasn’t aware the unions forced gas to go up nor set off a recession. I thought that was speculation and a housing bubble. Shame on those pilots for demanding a living wage. And the mechanics? Why that should be a minimum wage job.

Posted by: lexingtonlady | November 29, 2011, 10:31 am 10:31 am

I sincerely hope they come out of this better off and without merging with another carrier. Since the Continental/United merger, their airfares have skyrocketed and forget about trying to fly non-stop out of Newark Liberty…..their prices are astronomical. We don’t fly them anymore. We fly American because they are the most affordable and have wonderful service.

Another airline who will use bankruptcy to dump its debts and obligations in order to rake in big bucks. The fact is they negotiated these union contracts, so they should have to stand by their obligations. they got hurt by the down economy, oh well.

Sounds familiar huh? Unions and companies filing for bankruptcy, I think I am seeing a pattern here. Duh!!!

pksk531 wrote “The fact is they negotiated these union contracts, so they should have to stand by their obligations” — So, you think AA should just continue on the way they are going? Business as usual? Yeah, that’ll help those union jobs when AA goes out of business.

southwest is the only decent airline. free bags, no penalties to change tickets, etc.

Posted by: amy | November 29, 2011, 11:04 am 11:04 am

p.s. to those folks who think all AA employees are union- they are NOT. only pilots and flight attendants are unionized. all reservation staff is NON union.

Posted by: amy | November 29, 2011, 11:05 am 11:05 am

p.s. airport staff (ticket counter/gates) are non union also.

I’m not surprised by this at all. The service on AA has dropped dramatically over the last few years, to a point where my company avoids them if at all possible, even if they have the lowest rates. Their baggage fees were what finally made me stop using them for personal travel as well. Put the customer first and then you might not have to file for bankruptcy!

AA Flt Attendants you should becareful of what you say and do to other airlines. What goes around comes around…… It doesnt feel good when your company goes BANKRUPT. I hope this is an eye opener for the AA Flt Attendants that the industry has changed
. You guys are being selfish. On domestic you guys make 46.00 hr and anything flown over 70hrs you are at 52.90hr. International your at 49.14 hr anything flown over 70 hours your at 56.51. Demanding pay rates of a 2003 contract or you will strike is not right considering the shape of your company. Well I hope you are ready for whats to come. I hope that you are treated better than the way you treated TWA! Good Luck!

Once again, average Joes/Janes are caught in the middle, holding the bag and paying for the excesses at BOTH ENDS. A pox on unions. A pox on fat cat corporations.

I will not fly American since they left my car seat in Chicago on my trip to Maine so I arrive in Maine with a 6 month old and NO car seat to leave the airport in…. they told me they would deliver it later *LOL* yeah, that really helps THEN..they couldnt have had enough smarts to take off bags to accomodate a car seat *sigh* they tried to then offer me dirty expired car seats that people had left behind…luckally my cousin was able to bring me an extra after all that so we could at least leave the airport

Tacky headline, beginning American Airlines *PLUNGES….*

HOWDYMO1: If you want a historical “whim,” take a look at Continental Airlines’ history. As I recall from the era of ’94-’95, Continental sought permission for an early release of its its *second* go at Chapter 11. Normally, that might be seen as an indication that things went better than expected, and they no longer needed the Court to stand between the airlines and its creditor “according to plan.”. However, Continental filed a *third* petition about 30 days later.

By the way, it it not necessary to be literally broke/insolvent to file for bankruptcy.

Actually, this time I don’t think it is a union issue. The main issue seems to be higher fuel prices. Now what would cause higher fuel prices?

There is an old economic law. The greater the supply, the lower the price. The lower the supply, the higher the price. What would cause the supply of fuel to be low?

I would say a DIFFERENT group of far left loons. The greatest, most holy group of all: the global warming activists both in the government and out who are blocking oil drilling.

It is such ashame how all these airlines want to do is make money off the poor and middle class. The only people that can travel nowadays is the rich. What about all these baggages fees they collect from passenger who travel on their carrier everyday? WOW I can’t believe what I am hearing with all the billions of dollars they collected in baggages fees they have the nerves to be filing for brankruptcy.

Why hasn’t anyone asked what sort of golden parachute Arpy received for sending the company into bankruptcy?

Posted by: Kenn | November 29, 2011, 11:39 am 11:39 am

So AA looses money but all other major airlines made millions. Only 1 airline that I know of does not charge for bags and ticket prices have gone up. No wonder other airlines are making millions. they controlled their labor costs and charge more for their services…. nice. This is one industry that needs to feel the anger of the American people. Charging for bags??? Just forces people to bring a carry on then flight crew and other passengers complain about space.

Posted by: NoSpin1600 | November 29, 2011, 11:40 am 11:40 am

they are like the goevernment don’t do how to make cuts so they raise there prices.if all the airports would shut down maybe the government would do something about fuel and heating oil prices in this country ,but thats right we have a democrat congress and president that don’t want to have oil refine here in the united states and until we do we are done.

American has never played by the rules. They helped a great deal in driving Braniff out of business with their Sabre system. They constantly find small routes where other airlines are either pioneering or doing well, swoop in, drop their fares to nothing, drive the other airline out, and then cancel the route, leaving passengers with no choices. They sure haven’t invested much in replacing their aging fleet of MD80′s, noisy and uncomfortable 757′s, or dirty 767′s over the last few years. Unfortunately I have a LOT of miles with American and use the airline frequently. And, I would be very sorry for all the people working for AA who might lose their jobs, who are not responsible for the way the company is run. I saw a lot of airline employees lose everything in the 80′s and it wasn’t their fault. But, American is a sucky airline, because it’s management team is ruthless and sleazy, and it would be nice to at least see a nice house-cleaning from the top down.

AA recently got hit with massive fines for having passengers sitting on tarmac. Airlines then have to charge passenges higher fees. But passengers who were stranded got nothing. WHERE DOES ALL THE MONEY GO FROM THESE FINES – CONGRESSMENS BUDS SLUSH FUNDS??
Its time govnt agencies be investigated. Like the gold in Ft Knox, reportedly all counterfeited with tungsten cores now, there are reasons Ron Paul wants an investigation and not accepthing the word of Fed Reserve (NOT a govnt agency). This country is run by the criminals

I feel sorry for American Airlines as bankruptcy may not fix the underlying problem for very long.Volatile fuel prices, labor unrest, incredibly expensive equipment to buy and maintain, more Gov’t regulations ect.are not going to go away.Southwest Airlines seems to be the standard that competitors are trying to imitate but if you look closely they are not the same airline as when Herb Kelleher was running it.All airlines fail over time even Jetblue and Southwest will.If I can drive my car to a destination in around 5 hours, forget flying.what a hassle.

“…some Unions just do not care and those will kill the country.”

Look at better managed Southwest Airlines (also union, making money, and taking away AA customers). SWA employees are better paid than employees working for AA, all except for management. Ever wonder why AA employees are surly< or the fleet seems old and dirty, or that service has declined for years?

This was about an under-performing, incompetent CEO, not those people who are forced to work within a badly run organization (union or otherwise).

Meanwhile, AA's outgoing CEO Arpey got $5.2 MILLION last year even though his company posted $471 MILLION in losses. Tom Horton, the guy AA hired replace Arpey, made $3.1 million as president. All while the company was badly losing money.

AA is a sad example of what is wrong with our lopsided economy: Short term profits on the shoulders of workers; bonuses and obscene management salaries for crappy performance; money concentrating in the hands of a select few.

I happen to be one of those people that bust my butt to get the plane ready for on time and safe departure corporate america needs to quit being so greedy and pull their head out of their—!!!!! after avoiding bankruptcy thanks to the many sacrifices that the employees made by giving concessions our CEO Mr Carty the previous Ceo decides to retire and who pays the price the employee’s but, yet we fight to get back what we deserve through union negotiations and they simply throw a trump card Bankruptcy and now Mr Apprey decides its time to retire after insulting the employee’s. Ceo Carty walked away with 2 million est.. package for retirement while employees suffer I would be curious to know what Mr. Apprey is walking out with? would nt you? See the pattern here? Labor cost are to high they say, I say the corporate greed and bonus’s are what needs to be cut!

Posted by SCRED: The universal union creed: “We are entitled! We are invincible! We are unskilled! We are UNION!!!”

So, do you REALLY think the people in the front of the airplane who keep YOU from becoming a smoking hole in the ground are UNSKILLED? No, this is not a union problem, it is an unbelievably inept management problem. Southwest pilots make way more than American pilots, and you don’t see them running for bankruptcy protection. Back in 2003, the unions gave the company $1.5 Billion PER YEAR in wage cuts, benefit cuts and productivity to SAVE the company. We see how well THAT worked. Now they are running to the bankruptcy court to attempt to gut the employees again. Gerard (CEO, who conveniently retired yesterday so the bankruptcy courts won’t be able to touch HIS millions) and his team have taken management bonuses of about $400 Million PER YEAR since then, and squandered the rest of money. Bonuses are USUALLY paid for performance. Their only show was to take a once great company into bankruptcy. Those that simply point to unions being the problem are right where corporate America wants them – and the executives are laughing all the way to the bank. Union problem? I think not.

Ivan: You should be aware that any oil drilled here in the US ends up on the world market, and not on US soil. Drilling here will do nothing to the price of oil because OPEC will REDUCE output to compensate and keep prices high. Besides, once oil became a commodity, supply and demand was off the table as a price indicator. It’s all about speculation now.

I had no idea how many people are to blame;the unions of course, the people that know global climate change is real, the bagage handlers, Obama, regulations, FAA. I would think that the above theories, prove that the answer is not simple and the people claiming to know the answer are.

AMR merged with TWA…they should have kept TWA name
AMR boring old uniforms
AMR old fashioned company

If you PEoPLE Really believe that fuel governs cost of flight then you are truly the problem , As to the Washington politician( the House, Senate and congress) that set rules and policies over the economy. And Yet is is not a crime for them to engage in insider trading.
The high cost of Aviation tickets ” 121.00 carriers Is the gross mismanagement in ( contracts of maintenance) paper work storage of said paper work .
Pilots are over payed they only sign for the plane . WHEN Airframe AND Power planet RII Inspectors Lic through the FAA sign the Air worthlessness of “said person signs for 1.All maintenance complied with and paper work, 2. the Aircraft. 3. and All the passages .
that are carried on that Aircraft. Tell next maintenance, Heckle and Jeckle ( Pilot and co- pilot ) that fight only!!!!!

And how much will Gerard Arpey get in retirement compensation while the shareholders (and AA employee 401K’s) are given nothing as their stocks will be worthless now?
If he or anyone on the board is given a single dime in a retirement package, I hope shareholders sue AA out of existence.

The high cost of fuel and the high cost of BIG UNION LABOR does it every time!
My friend who is a retiree from American will most likely loose 80% of her pension as a result!
That really sucks!

BIG JIMMY | November 29, 2011, 2:59 pm posted: “The high cost of fuel and the high cost of BIG UNION LABOR does it every time!”

Then why, BIG JIMMY, do the union employees who work for SWA earn more? In October, Southwest Airlines posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit and bookings looked strog enough tos send its shares up 4%.

Meanwhile, AA’s outgoing CEO Arpey was paid $5.2 MILLION last year even though his company posted $471 MILLION in losses! Americans are weary of Right Wingers promoting the idea that it’s OK to destroy decent family wages and benefits so the top 1% – non-performers, not “job creators” – can be paid obscene amounts of money.

Posted by: newcountryman | November 29, 2011, 3:39 pm 3:39 pm

I retired from a large Aerospace company 7 years ago. Shortly thereafter, they eliminated the pension plan. Only a matching 401K now. Fortunately for me, I was grandfathered. Nothing to say if they ran into trouble and filed bankruptsy it couldn’t all go away. BTW, I also think many instances of executive pay is outrageous.

It couldnt happen to a crappier airline. rude and arrogant flight attendants, high prices and again rude and arrogant lousy flight jerks. I stopped flying them some time ago and would actually call them to tell then that they would likely be bankrupt soon because of the way they treat people. As far as I am concerned they have no one to blame but their selfish rude arrogant selves. I hope the flight attendants are happy with the results (resluts) of their attitudes and enjoy the spot in the back of the line at the unemployment office. They likely wont be getting stale peanuts and soda served there. Ha ha ha. another union fiasco. I hope they all get thrown out on their fat arrogant asses.

Base to be fixed right they messed it up so bad the pilots couldn’t test fly it. Took two weeks two get it to fly . Guess you get what you pay for. When people die maybe money won’t be so important. And thats a us co. wait till they get 3 dollor a hour singapor people to fix the jets.
