Made in America: Gift Ideas

SHOWS:

User Comments

Its very hard to find made in America gifts in most stores this holiday season. Stores should prominately display items made in America. The big box stores should have aisles that only have American made items. This would make it a lot easier to find and buy items made in USA.

You indicate on your site that LL bean is one of the companies that has products made in USA>
I have an LL bean fleece jacket that says made in El Salvador material from USA>…So, its not entirely made in the USA. I love LL Bean, but have been disappointed in things that I have purchased because it is NOT made entirely in the USA. ????? Can something be done about that LL Bean?????????

If you want to support American jobs and products, don’t forget to purchase a real Christmas tree. Americans don’t need any more Chinese plastic trash in our landfills. Real trees are a carbon sink, biodegradable, renewable and reusable.

There’s a great company in Oregon which makes soaps, lotions and misc.gifts. All the products are made with “genuine” Oregon rain water. It’s run by a husband and wife, and all the recipes are made with as many local, natural products as possible. The company name is Oregon Rain Soap Company. I’ve purchased items there for several years and have never been disappointed. They have a web site…..check it out!!

Until I can get a job, been unemployed for over 3 yrs, my Made in America gift to myself is that my mortgage is paid and my bills are paid-who are these people spending the average of 700.00 on Christmas gifts that they probably can’t afford or will be paying for over the next few years- I would rather do without and why has Christmas become who gives the best present regardless of where it comes from?

Every year I give my special recipe home canned jams, relishes, etc. that are packed in jars made by the Alltrista Corporation of Indianapolis, Indiana. The main ingredients were all home grown with the only exceptions being some spices or seasonings that aren’t grown in the USA, but they were all packed here.

I have been doing the “made in America” for many years. Made in America by me. I make the major portion of my gifts. Everything from knitted Christmas stockings to quilts. This year I have knitted three new stockings for the newest members of our family and am in the process of making clothing for my grandchildren. This I will continue to do for as long as I am capable.

Simon Pearce – both glass and pottery. Not only are we supporting a company that makes goods in the US, they are in an area of VT that was badly hit by the hurricane spawned storms. Their Quechee store is still trying to get back on its feet.
Also – All-Clad – be careful, their lids are made in China and also the stick free pots. Otherwise, very good cookware.

I posted Diane’s news piece to my facebook account and challenged all my friends to stop lining the pockets of foreign countries and help the U.S. get our OWN WORKERS back to gainful employment. I told all of them on facebook to stop looking for someone to blame, namely Obama and DO THEIR OWN PART if helping their fellow Americans. As far as I am concerned the buck stops with me. I will not be buying any product this Christmas that is not made in the U.S.A. If I can’t find it there, I will go to plan B and get the recipient something else that IS made in America. We have got to stop sending our work to other countries when we have so many in this country who can’t even feed their children let alone have a visit from Santa this Christmas. This is an outrage, Obama is not responsible for this! WE ARE for being creedy and wanting sub-standard products at a very cheap cost. My next car will not be a Honda as I have now. American car makers’ standards of quality have far surprassed foreign auto makers now, to continue to buy cars made in Japan, Korea and other countries is a poor excuse and if you do, you are directly contributing to the unemployment crisis in our great country – the U.S. of A.!!!

As a small business owner, and single mom of 3 young girls, I can attest to the importance of buying American-made. My company – Nikki’s You-nique Keepsakes Boutique (‘NYKB’) – makes handmade, personalized, and customized keepsake photo quilts and room decor, based in SW Wisconsin, USA. Any ‘theme’ (from Elvis to Bieber, Marilyn to Katy Perry, baby nursery to anniversary and Family Portrait or ‘Memory Lane’, and anything in between), we can create a one-of-a-kind keepsake for you that is 100% ‘Made in the USA’! I also do all I can to use materials that are made in the USA, including my batting that’s made from cotton grown in the USA. :)

I’m in. I’ve concentrated on buying locally made items from artisans and going to etsy.com for other items I could not find locally. And no matter what I shop for and buy I ask, “Do you have any ____ made in America?” This lets the stores know people are looking for this. This season I’ve bought soap and jewelry made locally and books by American authors printed here.

The most popular gift to give to family members is usually clothes. That said, I visited the websites listed for clothes above. Zentek, unless I’m missing something, showed one vest, one tank top and the rest was dog clothes. I’ve never, in years, found a coat, shirt, sweater or pair of pants made in the US at LL Bean. True Religion Jeans at $200+ per pair. Not happening. Sabaku, Rock Me Baby, and Bamboosa remind me of little gift shops in Anytown USA. There is nothing stand-out about any of the limited selection of clothes at each site, but if the goal is to buy US made products then I guess you take what you can get. American Clothing Company out of all listed is the best, but even there I found only one style of women’s jeans. Some fleece, but no real winter coats.

I love the hand-made products from this company! I have bought beautifully-created and -sewn throw pillows, dinner napkins and my sister in law just purchased the most beautiful carpet bag, she loves it and appreciates the incredible craftsmanship and the fact it was “made to measure” just for her, with her selecting the fabric too! A few years ago, I bought an elegant black velvet and red scarf which I prize, too! For this kind of hand-made craftsmanship you cannot beat the price! We keep this website in our FAVORITES!

Made in the USA is the way to go for so many reasons!
It creates American Jobs
It lowers unemployment

I have purchased products from 2 companies whose products are made in America. One is Gallery Leather in Bar Harbor, Maine. They make beautiful leather photo albums, planners and recipe books. I have bought several of their photo albums for wedding gifts and they have been quite nice.
The other company I would like to recommend is Oberon Design. They also make leather products and pewter jewelry. I have one of their “tree of life” pendant necklaces and receive compliments everytime I wear it.

Umm, NordicWARE is spelled incorrectly on this list- and American Apparel is nowhere to be found, and others do produce products abroad- get your facts straight- or are these companies paying you to promote them?

I think it’s important to not only buy American, but to let companies and stores know that this issue is effecting your purchasing decisions. I recently bought mid-priced non-stick cookware from Tramontina that is made in the USA – I wrote an email to this maker to let them know why I bought their product. And I wrote to two of that maker’s competitors, letting those two know why I didn’t spend that $130 on their cookware lines, because it was impossible to figure out where they make their products. I wrote an email to the retailer who sells the Tramontina cookware, telling them why I made this purchase in their store, and wrote to two other department stores to let them know why my $130 was spent elsewhere.
It’s only when companies and stores realize that they are losing sales to their competitors that they will pay attention to the issue of making and selling made-in-America products.

And I plan on buying Rada knives soon – made in Iowa and reasonably priced.

I agree with others above – L.L.Bean should be taken off the list of recommended companies – none of their clothing is made in the US.

I’m in!! But, I’m not sure your numbers. You show that if we spend $64 on American gifts it would give 200,000 jobs to Americans. It’s less than a month til Christmas. The stores would have stocked for Christmas. Didn’t China already make its money? Wouldn’t these stores end up with extra inventory if shoppers don’t buy it. I completely agree with “BUY AMERICAN”!!! I think if this was promoted year round it could have an impact on American jobs. Starting this close to Christmas could possibly hurt some stores that could end up with extra inventory that will probably go on sale after Christmas and sell anyway. I don’t know, maybe I am totally wrong (wouldn’t be the first time).

I’m in! To Dave who posted at 6:38 this morning — not saying you’re wrong, but we have to start sometime, somewhere. Maybe it won’t make a huge impact this Christmas, but it’s a start. Retailers will stock what the public demands so if we don’t start demanding Made in America products, things will not change. I hope this trend spills over to companies who lay off thousands of Americans to move their Customer Service Centers overseas. When I call the 800# I want to speak to someone who is sitting in a cubicle somewhere in the United States of America.

I would like to see the large chain stores have a section of ‘MADE in USA Products’ or place special tags (maybe ‘American Flag’ tags on the shelf where Made in USA products are placed. If chain stores start to do this and see large sales of American made products, hopefully it would encourage them to expand their line of American made products which would help more and more American small businesses to become profitable and expand! That’s how big business and small business can work together to save this country!

Not all Vinturi Wine Aerators are Made in the USA — check the bottom of the box. I was at Bed,Bath&Beyond this morning and found a great display of Vinturi products. I picked up one of the boxes (red wine aerator) and on the bottom a “Made in China” sticker. I started checking all the boxes – more than half were stamped Made in China. I spoke to a manager who was surprised to see that. He stated the mgmt team was just talking about that product and how it is Made in the USA. I purchased one whose box states “Made in USA” but I’m feeling skeptical. I would like Vinturi to explain.

Thank you Dianne Sawyer and team. This one solution, buy American, will create a stimulus package no government on earth could duplicate, and have the fastest and largest national change in our economy. Our entire problem is trade imbalance. Our federal deficit is only a by product of trade imbalance. God Bless you Dianne, and your team. You are doing more than Obama, the Republicans and Democrats could ever hope to accomplish, and that is because the answer is in the hands of American consumers, who still spend more than anyone else on earth, and who can solve this problem, with the kind of encouragement, leadership and education your team is engaged in.

I would love to buy American made products but I don’t know which ones are unless I open the box and read the tiny label on the bottom. Even then I sometimes can’t read it.

I wish GMA would come up with a universal “American Made” logo that all American manufacturers could stamp on the front of the box of their product so it will be nice and big for shoppers to see. And then shame all the makers of American products into actually using that logo.

I love finding items Made in America, although I have found that you have to watch the labels all the time,I found some Libby glass ware, some hanes socks, chippawa boots and nordic ware thatwasn’t made in the u.s.a and it really puzzled me as to why some were and some weren’t. I bought my husband hanes socks made in usa when I went back to the same store a week later, for the same sox,the ones on the shelf were made in elsalvador. When my husband went looking for work boots,he had intentions of buying another pair of chippawa boots, his original pair were made in the usa, they had a metal us flag on the laces. When we went looking all we could find were boots that were made in china. I think all things made in USA should proudly display an
American flag on them. It saddens me to think that we have given our country away to the point that we have to search high and low to find products made in USA,and that I feel like jumping for joy when I finally find an item. I’m so happy that you are bringing this to the fore front of the news .(thank you)
I hope that more and more people will tell their stores that they want products made in USA. Because not only have our clothing, housewares, and electronics been inundated with products made in other countries,I’m now finding that I have to read every label in the grocery store, because many products that I believed were made here, have been made outside this country.
SHAME ON US for letting this happen to our BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY its time to invest in the U.S. and our future.
Some companies that I have found that are supporting the U.S. are Ball canning jars, Anchorhockind glass ware, Pyrex glass and bake ware,Sterilite plastics,Field Crest bath rugs, and Rival vacum seal bags.

In Central Wi there’s a wonderful guy(retired attorney)who owns and operates “Jurrustic Park” with his wife. He creates “swamp monstors” out of old metal, they are delightful and whimsical and sold all over the country. His wife creates jewelry, out of glass beads she’s crafted. (I believe

My parents are older and don’t want “presents”. They enjoy gift cards for restaurants. So I thought, all these places currently employ Americans; if more people ate out, they might have to employe more staff. They would certainly have to buy more food. Seems like that would keep a lot of jobs going and might even create some. So we are giving gift cards to various restaurants to our family this year. Hope this counts towards the Made In America.

Congress could take a lesson from Diane Sawyer and the ABC team. All congress does is talk about job creation. What you have done, and continue to do, is create jobs for down and out American Citizens. Because of corporate greed, we are transferring our wealth to China. All you have to do is look at the trade deficit which averages 50 to 70 billion a month. If this continues the wealthy will not any middle class to sell to. Thank you for the great work that you are doing for American workers. I recommend buying CORELLE dishware. It is carried by Walmart.

Wrangler jeans are made in North Carolina USA. ABC did a wonderful story on them wmhere they lost their factory during the tornado and most of their workers lost their homes as well.
Wrangler had to totally rebuild. Instead of moving to China they chose to stay in NC and continued to pay their staff their wages until they reopened.
Wrangler shows old time American values which we have lost. Everyone should show their support and buy their jeans at Wrangler I bought a pair yesterday. No I am not affiliated with Wrangler in any way or know no on that even remotely works there.

I don’t know where you get the idea that L.L. Bean has merchandise made in America. I just received one of their catalogs in the mail. I looked all through it and did not find one single item that was not imported. L.L. Bean is an iconic American company, and I am disgusted that they have totally abandoned the American worker in favor of foreigners. They’re just taking advantage of people who are forced to work for slave labor wages and under horrific condtiions in Third World Factories; meanwhile, too many American factory workers are unemployed. Needless to say, I will NOT be ordering from L.L. Bean — their catalog is now in the recycling bin! Shame on you, L.L.!

Want Made In America? Get out of the big box stores and the department stores. Most of what they’re selling isn’t made in America. Although we did find a Slinky in the dollar aisle at Target over the weekend. Slinky is Made In America, is a classic and the one at Target is small enough to fit in a stocking. We also like to buy from our local artisans. Not only are you buying American you’re also supporting someone in your local community and reducing your carbon imprint. If you want to buy online, check out overstock.com. On the left side of their screen they have a Made In America button so you can see which products they have which are made in America. And I’m with Anna above, WHY AREN’T AMERICAN GIRL PRODUCTS MADE IN AMERICA???? To me that’s obscene.

Texas Jeans have 100% Made in the U.S.A. jeans for under $30. Nothing goes into these jeans not made here in the states. Many companies claim to be made in the U.S.A. but make a phone call to them and ask them to list how many factories the have offshore, what vendors actually provide their materials from the U.S. You will be surprised at what you find. Many companies you “think” are made in the U.S.A. are not, or just enough to get buy the FTC rules. Check out Texas Jeans for a TRUE American made Jean at an amazing value of under $30.

I have previously bought items from LL Bean and have been pleased with both the quality and return policy. Recently I perused their entire catalog and found only a couple of items made in the U.S. One item was Vermont maple syrup. Even the wood kindling was imported, despite the company being from Maine! I have bought nothing in the past year because of the import issue. I would love to purchase from this company again if they renewed their past history of manufacturing items here, as I like the style and quality of their products.

Yankee Candles are made in Massachusetts. LL Bean only offers Boat and Tote bags and the LL Bean Boot made in the USA. I noticed that Christmas lights by the American Light Company are made in China! Maybe we need to copy protect “USA” and “America”

I bought a bracelet from this website and was delighted with the product. It was absolutely beautiful and the customer service was amazing! Fast delivery time with a personalized handwritten note. Now that is why buying handmade/American products are the best!

It’s good to see the products made in America listed. Let’s go one step further, buy American made products and shop local small businesses in your community. Let’s keep our communities strong. Don’t forget to buy American for your pets too! Pirate Paws Barkery is a small local business making all natural gourmet treats for pets. They are using American made products so your pets can have American made treats and gifts! They are on facebook.

The best baking pans are USA. You can get them at Bed Bath & Beyond. They come in many sizes, and are wonderful to use.

It is impressive how just buying American can make a big difference in people’s lives. I already had decided to only give Made in America gifts this year. Since everyone owns so much “stuff”, I will be making cards that say “Made in America” on the front with 5 $1 coins hot glued inside. Not only will I be supporting “Made in America” but the post office as well since extra postage will probably be required to mail the gifts.

I LOVE my custom-designed necklace from Studio Jewel. It means more to me knowing a hard-working American made it. Looking forward to adding to my “collection.”

After watching the Made in America segments, I definitely plan to spend over $64 on Made in America products. My first purchases are going to be Nordic Ware bundt pans and Tervis glasses – two companies highlighted on ABC News. Thanks for highlighting the many companies and providing your viewers with options on where to purchase products. We need to support local businesses that provide Made In America products! Thanks!

I have met Lisa Lehmann and have a number of her pieces of jewelry from STUDIO JEWEL. They are beautiful and expertly made and I always receive compliments on them wherever I go! They are not only American made, but MICHIGAN made! Buy local! <3

GREAT IDEA. Thanks for the Challenge! If I were rich enough I would start my own magazine titled “Made in America” and it would feature Made in America businesses and products to get the word out to everyone!

Think local. Buy gift certificates from your local merchants, hairdressers, grocers, gas stations, car dealers. Give your wife gift certificates for a house cleaning, massage, spa day. Buy American made farm products, American made cars, tires, everything. Only AMERICANS can turn this country around. Make donations to your local help center, churches or charities. People are hurting all over this country, especially the elderly. Give your grandparents restaurant gift cards. It’s EASY, if you just stay focused!!!!!Give your family a trip to DisneyWORLD instead of more Chinese made toys!. Americans work in the tourist industry also! United ,we all stand:)

Bought a WEBER grill (MADE IN USA) for my husband for Christmas. Bought KONG brand toys and treats (MADE IN USA) for both of my daughters’ dogs. Bought locally made chocolate (MORLEY CANDY) to give to all my coworkers. We live on a canal that gets weedy in the summer, so I asked for a SEAWEEDER RAKE for Christmas, made in the USA. I love Woodwick brand candles and was told they are USA made. If you are into genealogy, FAMILY TREE MAKER is an American made product… developed, created, and shipped from right here in the USA. My family decided last May that we have had it with Chinese imports and would have a MADE IN THE USA Christmas. I’m so glad to hear it’s catching on everywhere!

You need to remove your link to the Vinturi Wine Aerator. I ordered two of these as Christmas gifts on the basis that they were made in America. Not so. “Made in China” is more like it. I only found this out after receiving the product and seeing the “Made in China” sticker on the product packaging. Disappointing considering we are led to believe we are buying a product made in the US. My intentions were good, I know yours are too, would you please remove the link. Thanks!

I tried the stores in our small town first and asked for items, especially toys, made in the USA. This left most of the sales clerks at a loss…..some flat-out said they had nothing. How sad to choose between supporting local businesses or buying American! I found Doodle Town Toys online and am thrilled with the quality of their wooden toys…..made in Minnesota. I See Me sells beautiful personalized children’s books, discovered by doing a “toys made in USA” online search. We took a day-trip to The Amish Country Store in Berlin, OH to purchase Wendell August Forge ornaments for our family members and had them engraved on site. It’s a start!

Made in America ! Yes !!! My beautiful 76 yr old momma who has soc. sec as her only income has purchased made in America yarn from local businesses to crochet hats for the homeless (here in America)….not just a few, but hundreds, if not thousands. I am so proud of her, because she has never asked for even a thank you. She quietly drops them off in huge bags to charities that will give them away for free – she has been doing this for years even though her hands cramp and go numb- she also made hospitalized neonates and drug addicted babies hats ! She is awesome …….a total inspiration.

I am seconding the comment on Cherry Republic. They have products made of and with good ol’ Michigan cherries. Their staff make up beautiful gift baskets and they often have $5 flat rate shipping specials on any size order…AND…Their Salsa is TO DIE FOR!! Yummy. I also found a pair of camo fleece sweat pants for my BIG brother at justgear.com for under $20.

The Container Store has many gift wrapping supplies that are made in America. It was really great being able to get everything I needed to wrap my gifts with, including the tape and ribbon! So not only are my gifts made in America they are wrapped with everything USA made! Brought a smile to my face!

A search feature would be nice! I’m looking for Made in America Christmas lights, and I’d like to know if any of the suppliers you’ve identified carry any. I’ve found some, at lightinguniverse.com, but I’d like to have a wider selection to choose from. I will be buying $88 worth of LEDs to replace the lights we donated last year.

There’s a great little Surf company in San Diego that sources and sells US items (www.birdrockapparel.com). I bought a few belts handmade in the USA for my brothers for X-mas…they’re way underpriced and look awesome. I also have seen some of their hoodies and shirts in surf shops, some materials aren’t made in the US but I talked to one shop owners and they said these guys are doing their best to source everything local!

Beautiful hand knitted and hand made quality knitted wool caps made in Vermont. — personalized. I was able to custom build the hat I wanted for her on line — which was fun — (she is on a high school crew team; and I had her name and high school knitted on it). Beautiful. The entire hat is fleece lined. So warm and soft! The service was so personalized I was amazed. I called to question something on the design, and Mitzy asked me to hold while she spoke directly to the knitter. It took a few minutes. WOW. It was wonderful. The hat arrived today and I am thrilled with it. Department store hats could not compare — never mind the personalized aspect.

We were excited to buy American for Christmas this year and used ABC’s site to locate stores that sell American-made products. L.L. Bean is one of the stores listed so we ordered two items from them only to find out they were NOT made in America. ABC and L.L. Bean should be ashamed for publishing misleading or false information. ABC should publicly acknowledge this mistake and remove L.L. Bean from their list. L.L. Bean should be admonished for misleading American citizens.

I would like to say that the abc news series on Made in America has inspired me, my family and many of my friends to look actively for products made in America. Your positive and entertainig program has made an impact on our country’s thinking and buying habits that could have an effect on bringing back American jobs and reversing the trade imbalance. But unfortunately, our collective memory is short and we sometimes need to be reminded to do what is right. Please continue your Made in America segment beyond the holidays and encourage other community minded entities to take up your banner and continue to encourage our nation to spend our dollars at home and support the American economy.
