Bill Maher Courts Controversy Over Tim Tebow Tweet

Getty Images
A tweet from liberal firebrand Bill Maher has incurred the wrath of conservatives across the U.S., who are now calling for a boycott of the political commentator’s HBO series after he slammed Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.
Maher, after the Boncos lost 40-14 to the Buffalo Bills Saturday, tweeted, “Wow, Jesus just f***ed #TimTebow bad! And on Xmas Eve! Somewhere in hell Satan is tebowing, saying to Hitler “Hey, Buffalo’s killing them.”
Tebow, who has left sports fans in awe of his prowess on the football field, is known to be devoutly religious, and has popularized the term “tebowing” – as in getting down on a knee and praying as events, such as a football game, still unfold around you.
The comment by Maher, who is an atheist and took world religions to task in his 2008 documentary “Religulous,” led to some colorful backlash, notable from Fox News’ Eric Bolling: “Bill Maher is disgusting vile trash. I can’t even repeat what he just tweeted about Tebow..on Christmas Eve. #straighttohellBill,” a tweet from Bolling read.
Meanwhile, a movement to boycott Maher’s HBO current events show “Real Time with Bill Maher” is developing across Twitter. The comedian has yet to comment on the controversy.
Maher’s tweet must have been missed by Tebow himself, who after the game wrote on Twitter, “Tough game today but what’s most important is being able to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas everyone GB2.”
Maher is no stranger to controversy, or courting the wrath of the conservative right. Last year he began to release embarrassing old clips of tea party darling and political hopeful Christine O’Donnell from her appearances on his previous talk show “Politically Incorrect,” and earlier this year calls for his ouster from HBO came after he discussed “hate sex” with GOP candidates Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum.
“Real Time with Bill Maher” returns to HBO on January 13.

Bill Maher is a sorry excuse for a human being, in my humble opinion.

Bill Maher is hysterical and to think conservatives would call for a boycott of his show…..>LOL!!! HA HA HA HA HA HA!! not one of them watches it, and no one that watches the show would listen to a ‘conservative boycott” for a minute. in fact, they are so dumb nothing will bring MORE attention to his show than conservatives boycotting it. And…he has a point, sort of, doesn’t he? Tim Tebow thanks Jesus for his wins. Really? So Jesus is making the other team lose then??? I thought Jesus said not to wear your prayer on your sleeve and pray behind closed doors. Tim is making a huge spectacle of his religious beliefs, which is fine in and of itselt, but then, be prepared for the backlash, such as, if you lose, then folks will rile you that Jesus let you, or caused you, to lose. The point Bill is making is that you win or lose based somewhat on luck, but mostly, skill. The tweet showed how ridiculous it is to expect Jesus make your team win just because you suck up to him really badly in public during the games. I dont think Jesus is that egotistical. And stupid. Sucking up to him was not his purpose while down here. And maybe, yes, maybe, making him lose bad on Christmas eve IS HIs way of saying ,ya know, the showboating about your faith…yeah, I’m not so impressed.

Bill Maher has no manners. He needs someone to TEACH him some manners. I would love to “teach” him some manners, the little smart-mouthed punk!

Maher owes an apology to absolutely NO one. His tweet — as offensive as some may find it — simply pointed out the utter stupidity of believing that a person who’s been dead for 2000 years has an effect on a meaningless sporting event.

I’ve never really cared for Bill Maher, the Hierophant of Atheism. If he was really any good, he would do his show live rather than editing it so that he seems witty and an intellectual. I’d love to get a shot at him and do a live one hour stint on religion. No edits, no holds barred. He would probably walk off like Ron Paul after 15 minutes.

Bill Maher used to be funny. Used to be. A long long time ago. Now he’s just a master of the cheap shot, the king of condescension. Maybe if he, and other lazy comedians would actually do their research, they would find that their easy targets are real people, the issues they take on are more complex than they want to believe. Want to know the key to a truly funny comedian? He makes people across the spectrum, people of all types, laugh. It’s easy to get one group to laugh at a group they disagree with. But if you can get them both to laugh, then you have accomplished something.

Begging “god” to help you win a football game is pathetic, and an insult to god ( existing or not). There is nothing more ungodly than the conservatives legacy of great recessions, criminal inequality injustice, war, hate and intolerance, destruction of our environment, and opposition to science and common sense. They are so caught up in their FOX hole they do not see the world has moved on.

Posted by: WAYNE | December 28, 2011, 2:56 am 2:56 am
The point of his tweet was to ridicule how crazy it is for sports stars to thank Jesus/God for their sucess. If there is a God it’s juvenile to think he/she cares about a sporting event. It implies then that God is rooting against the other team and how come Tebow and his like never complain about God when they lose, which would seem fair. It was poor choice of words from Bill but his point is valid.

What conservative watches his show?? It’s hilarous how some of these so called “conservatives” are whining about his comments, yet their own actions dont mark them, as either christians or even decent human beings. It’s easy to lash out at others but how about tuning that high power critique, onto yourselves for a change? Considering the way republicans are slashing away at the security net for the poor and seniors…I hardly look to the right for “compassion”…besides that would be too much like “progressive” behavior…wouldnt?

I like Bill’s humor usually, but when I watched him in his documentary about religion, I did think that he crossed the line a few times. As an Agnostic, I still think that people should respect other peoples beliefs and not be too abusive about them. On the other hand, I do feel that religion has been a part of the problems of the world more than part of the solutions.
Posted by: JLee | December 28, 2011, 3:54 am 3:54 am
So when someone on the left hate speaks against religious sensitivities, only the “right wing” are described as being offended. I imagine that if someone hate spoke against, say, people of color, ABC would report that outrage would only be on the left. Right. Apparently, it’s still socially acceptable to ridicule the religious, though apparently only white religious people. Black athletes give thanks to God and Jesus all the time, but racist, hypocritical left wing cowards like Maher don’t say a word about them. I guess they think that white people should know better.

Walt Heinecke, you have absolutely no clue what you’re talking about. Tim Tebow has never once said that God was the reason for a Denver Broncos victory. He merely feels that belief in God helps give him extra motivation and passion in a game. Hell, I’m not religious at all, but if Tebow wants to believe that, then that’s his business. However, for you to allude to Tebow saying or implying that God helps the Broncos win is a flat-out lie.

So ESPN fired Hank Williams for making a Hitler reference and everyone was outraged, I don’t recall everyone running to Hank’s aid and screaming freedom of religion or free speech. Now a lowlife like Bill Maher runs his pole smoker and everyone is screaming hate on religion and freedom of speech. Well I am going to excerise my right to practice Christianity and speak my mind. “Bill Maher isn’t stupid he’s just possessed by a retarded atheist ghost!” Now I excerised my right to free speech and freedom of religion so you left nut jobs can shut up!

Same can be said for country music stars and anyone else who wants to thank his/her imaginary boss man in the sky everytime they get the spotlight. If they are so public about it,they should expect some backlash. If an athlete rolled out his prayer rug ,got on his knees and faced Mecca everytime he scored, I’m sure the xtians would have a fit! Bill, keep being Bill and your fans will continue to love you!

It is so funny that people actually think that Tebow thinks hes winning because of God , that is not we he is doing he is giving praise to CHRIST for his gift to be a quaterback to play in the NFL if you noticed he praised CHRIST even after he lost. Very typical of people seeing or beliveing what they want before they get the whole facts. There are 3 truths I know for sure clinical studies have proven 1) 10 out of 10 people die 2) there is a god and you will meet him and be acountable. 3) his son is Christ. Now you dont have to belive in the latter two but remember 4, 5, 6 hundred years ago they didnt belive the earth was round that didnt make it true . THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE

Tebow has left sports fans in awe of his prowess? When did this happen? Ranked #1 in rushing yards, ranked 31st in passing yards. About the only thing Tebow had going for him was his ability to NOT throw interceptions. And since actually throwing the ball is a last resort for Mr. Tebow that’s not exactly the hardest order to fill. Except when playing Buffalo apparently.
Maher’s comments are very appropriate. Tebow has been thanking God for his success for years, yet apparently receives no blame when they lose? I guess Buffalo just prayed harder….right? Maybe one day people will be able to laugh at the absurdity of thanking God for sporting events. Until then, the religious right can continue to miss the joke and be angry.

What Tebow believes does not agree with what Maher believes, boo hoo. Maher can try the usual tricks of denouncing and berating ideas and beliefs that do not agree with his. Tebow is working hard and facing challenges he is not expected to win and usually does. Tebow is the underdog who is succeeding and inspiring people. Our country needs more positive people like Tebow. People like Maher can only criticize and complain as he becomes a model encouraging people to become whiners to be heard and get what they want without doing anything about it. Maher is riding any popularity wave he can to stay afloat. If Maher doesn’t like what Tebow has to say then he can turn the channel. I turned the channel from Maher’s show as I grew tired of watching and listening to him.

i’m not big on religion myself (like maher, i was a catholic school kid who was totally turned off to religion by that experience) and i share a lot of maher’s views of religion. that being said, my father (a very devout catholic and the finest man i have ever known) taught me from a young age that, no matter what you believe, you should never mock another man’s faith. maher makes his gravy by being offensive and controversial. he has every right to do so, but exercising that right also exposes him to legitmate criticism of his methods, and his comments about tebow were over the top…and i’m no tebow fan either.

I keep hearing people demeaning Christians and those who believe in a God. President Obama believes in God and attend church. I’m sure he prays for this country and for the little things like the food on his plate. Christians are thanking God for their health and to allow them to do their best in his name. Not to win football games. Christians thank God when they win or lose, because they are thankful for life. I like to hear some of you atheist bash Obama because he claims to be a Christian and prays to God.

Regardless if you are Christian or atheist or something else, is it so hard to show each other respect. I used to like Bill Maher, his shows were interesting. He has every right to debate anyone about anything, however, I am tired of the smarta$$ disrespectful way he treats people. I suppose it is an attempt to look smart and sophisticated, but he comes off just as smarmy as any television evangilist. Does it really bother him that much that Tebow believes what he does or prays? It doesn’t hurt anyone. I don’t believe any higher power, if it exists, really gives a rat’s behind about football, but if it makes Tebow happy, let him be.

Denver has won 8 and lost 7. Weak and unimpressive. Seems to me that God was listening more to Green Bay with a 14 win and 1 loss record. So Gods message to Tim would be you can’t have everything you want. Go Detroit…Go New Orleans…Go Oakland.

When Maher makes anti-Christian comments, people should take a deep breath and then take another deep breath, and then switch the channel, or read another website, or turn the page of the paper. It is not correct, in Maher’s opinion to make “anti-atheist” comments, or comments against anything he believes in, or doesn’t believe in. So if he wants to play that game, that’s ok.

He is on par with Rush on the right or Kieth Olberman on the left… They represent the far fringes but are never aware of their own ignorance. Bill Maher thinks he is the smartest person in the room when he is actually the most misinformed person in most cases.

You know, the Bible say wide is the gate that leads to destruction and many will find it. Bill and his supporters and sympathizers are in the fast pass line. Jesus said if you are ashamed of me, I will be ashamed of you. I have yet to see Tebow praying when interviewed. He simply gives credit where credits due for his gifts and talent. Those who read also understand that this world is the devils world. Tebow expresses he is not of this world. To say you love the things of this world, the Father is not in you (1 John 2:15) Way to go Tebow. God Bless and see ya in heaven

Bill Maher funny?? Now that’s funny! He may have been humorous years ago but that’s over now. I haven’t watched him in years and am still amazed he’s on TV. I guess I just don’t understand why people are getting all up in the air over his vile, crude comment. To give him more publicity over his idiot rants just fuel this moron! Simply ignore him and perhaps he’ll go away….far..far…away. Or better yet, just don’t watch him, un-follow him, and whatever else you need to do to be rid of this person that is an obvious irritant. And just because you CAN say something, doesn’t mean you should…shame on you Bill!

Pray when you want because NO one cares, vote TOTALLY according to wwjd which is just a STUPID as all the other crap coming from the right. Why not try to vote in someone that has a BRAIN – which wasn’t very important in 2000 to 2008, and also vote in someone who understands that we are NOT the only country in this big world RON PAUL!!! When I listen to and see what Republicans believe, I FEAR for our Nation!!!

It’s so sad. As always the most devoutly religious among us are filled with the most hate and outrage at a stupid joke. Bill Maher is a COMEDIAN. Telling jokes. In a country that supposedly has free speech. Guess what; Not everyone believes as you do. Please remove your feelings from your sleeve.

Drew Brees is a born again Christian and you don’t see him throwing his faith in peoples faces every time he scores a touchdown. He just set the all time season NFL passing record and in his post game speech to players not one mention of Jesus Christ. Christians like Brees and Kurt Warner win on the field and celebrate there love for Jesus in there way much better then overhyped Tebow.

My,my, seems like Bill may have struck a nerve with the religious folk. Is it not the comedian’s job to make us laugh, but more importantly to point out the ridiculousness of any society? To make us THINK. Just as many people hate Bill for his controversial statements, so do many others despise Rush. Their jobs are to “stir the pot”. And you can see the Christians’ reactions if Tebow did throw down his prayer rug and pray towards Mecca, it would be the President’s fault!! I figure he’s just praying to God for enough talent to compete in the NFL. He’s a second or third string quarterback at best, with a penchant for showboating his religion. He’s young and dumb and the Christians are just “itchin for a hero”.

1) Maher has done slams on just about every religon that is out there. Get off your self important kiester and do a search on his stand up material and past shows. I remember him doing a muslim fashion pagent in one of his stand ups.
2) I have a brain cell that fired off and saw what the tweet was about – a joke. Reading books instead of burning them sort of helps intelligence quotient improve. Some of you trolls might want to try it.
3) If you didn’t like the joke, guess what. It’s your problem/opinion. Or maybe practice a better option and do what most religions do. FORGIVE HIM and press on like adults.
4) Half of you fail to see the ratings/media game that this is generating for ALL PARTIES. ABC, HBO, Maher, etc. (after all he works with media corperations to get his show on the air….. DUH!)
5) About 75% of you are nothing but angry children with keyboards. Do humanity a favor and go back to school and learn to grow up.

There is tolerance for every group except Christians these days. It has become acceptable to mock and criticize them and to try to confine them in the walls of the church. Christians have as much right as anyone else to their beliefs and the public expression of those beliefs. Let’s see if Mr. Maher has the courage to make fun of a Muslim. What would happen then?
Posted by: Moonhill | December 28, 2011, 11:41 am 11:41 am
To: Walt Heinecke – Im not meaning to pick on you persomally but your comment covers a couple of issues that are pretty common and need to be addressed. Just like you said, people who watch Real Time with Bill Maher wont care about conservative or christian people boycotting the show. Your right. But the same is true when a fan of Bill Maher, who is a huge critic of religious people, tries to speek as if they understand what is going on when a person is living out their faith in Jesus Christ. When Tim Tebow thanks Jesus after a game he is giving him the glory for something good in his life. As Christians we believe that ALL good things come from God and we are to give thanks for them, weather that is a victory in a sport, a raise at work, or simply nice weather. We thank God for all good things and give Jesus Christ the glory. The reason we give Jesus the glory is becuase his sacrafice on the cross made it possible for us to be in the presence of God when our time on earth is over. So ya see, without him we are sepparated from God and nothing good matters because ultimately we have no hope. Tim Tebow is not saying that God is a huge NFL fan and only wants Tim Tebow to win. But Tebow is saying something like….. hey, something good just happened to me and a lot of eyes are on me, so Im going to point their eyes to my true source of hope and strength.
You and others have also made the comment about how the Bible talks about prating in private and not in public. This is true, Jesus said this when speaking about the religious leaders of his time who were corrupt, greedy, and proud. The mistake you and others make is very common. Many people (even christian pastors to be fair) like to take one line from the Bible and and run with it. This is not the right way to go about anything. Let me give you an example. If you are in a courthouse with your 10 yr. old son and he starts to run, most parents would yell out “HEY! STOP RUNNING!!” The next day you could be watching the same kids baseball game and yell out “RUN RUN!!!!! “after he hits the ball. That 10 yr old is not going to look at you and say “Make up your mind man! yesterday you told me not to run!” He wont do that because he understands through other life lessons that there is more to it such as time and place for this example. The same is true with the Bible you have to use all of it and not just one line and you also have to understand the context. In this case Jesus was warning people to NOT be like those religious leaders who are ALL show and NO heart. There are also many parts in the Bible that tell us to be bold in our faith, to give God the glory, and be a light to the world…… This is what Tebow is doing. His praying in public and giving Jesus Christ the glory can NOT be accurately compared to the comments of Jesus in regards to the corrupt religious leaders. I hope this clears things up. You dont have to like Tim Tebow or anything he statnds for but I think people need to understand what they are talking about when they speak.
I would also like to say that ABC is obviously on the side of Bill Mahar with this issue. This is made clear with the laughing in the back ground THEY ALLOWED to happen when the quote was read.

Calling Maher a “liberal firebrand” is an insult to liberals – most of us who are tolerant of others beliefs. Maher is the opposite of a liberal – he readily insults, embarrasses, offends and puts down anyone who doesn’t think exactly like he does. We liberals believe in free will and encouraging others to develop their own philosophical/religious beliefs. Maher does not – he wants everyone to believe the same thing (removing free will) and is a fan of communism, which is the opposite of true democracy. He is no liberal – infact, he is no different than the ultra conservatives he professes to despise and is cut from the same cloth they are. I gave up watching him years ago and canceled my HBO subscription primarily because of him. It’s not a boycott – it’s a personal choice. He says these offensive things for attention and it’s immature. Like a two year old throwing a temper tantrum, just tune him out.

Iconstantly told that educated liberals were supposed to be kind and inclusive. Yet they show me everyday that they are vile and full of hate. I guarentee that if T. T were a practicing Muslim-BM would have only praised him-Why do we celebrate M. Vick and the thugs but persecute people who are on the other side of the fence-(while he may be over the top at times)-people like Tebow? I understand BM is out only for himself and ratings but why is he given a pass for these remarks? Why was Obama given a pass with the “Guns, Bible and bitter clingers” remark-yet we make new laws of not shaking hands and wearing veils for drivers Liscences-it is interesting and very sad to watch all this from a distance

A boycott of HBO? It’ll never happen. And even if it does it won’t put a dent in Bill Maher’s ratings, no matter how high or low they may be. Why? Because in this economy I doubt there are a significant number of HBO subscribers like there are for non-premium cable. HBO is an exclusive lot. Bill Maher’s fans are an exclusive lot. Bill Maher has the right to say what he wants within this exclusive lot, no matter how vulgar it may be (hey, has anyone ever heard of Lenny Bruce?). Besides, he’s said worse things about Sarah Palin. You may agree with him; you may disagree with him. Most of the time I disagree with him but I still listen to his show (I subscribe to the podcast because I don’t want to pay for HBO) because it’s the guests on his show that lend the most substance to “Real Time” than Bill Maher himself. Among all this backlash he’s stirred up, I think the best response has been from Tim Tebow himself, because he responded only to the aftermath of the game and added a remark about the beautiful season of Christmas and was unaware of Maher’s remark.

“Bill Maher has incurred the wrath of conservatives across the U.S., who are now calling for a boycott of the political commentator’s HBO series…”

this has nothing to do with freedom of speech. there’s no government actor involved on either side, promoting or denying speech. that’s the only time freedom of speech is an issue. calling for boycotts is also a form of speech. the issue here is someone saying something that some agree with and some disagree with that speech. that’s what open public discourse is about. maher says stuff, people react to it…positively or negatively. the government and first amendment have nothing to do with this.

Why are people getting so upset at his one albeit mean-spirited comment to Tebow when asshats can go scream at soldier’s families telling them their sons and daughters went to Hell. Really, people? Stop complaining about these little trivial comments and focus on the latter, much more important matter.

Ok….here’s the thing people are missing:
TEBOW IS -NOT-, REPEAT, -NOT- trying to tell people God is winning games for him He -IS- thanking God for his abilities. If you are a Christian, it is part of the doctrine to give thanks to the Lord for the talents you are given.
Juding from the comments from Maher and others (SNL, commenters on this very page), it would seem their view of the Christian faith is taken from syndicated episodes of Family Guy rather than the Christian doctrine itself.
I’m going to have to ask all of you pay attention to what is actually going on instead of making things up, kthx!

Drama for yo mama – I think the break down of tolerance, acceptance and manners in this country is a huge problem in this country. There was a time when we could respectfully disagree with one another – not anymore. And while we slowly allow name-calling and poor manners to gain greater acceptability in our culture – youth are running wild – the news is filled with stories about teens who think it’s simply all good fun to ransack stores in groups, shoplift, throw chairs at shoppers in a mall, attack one another, etc. as long as it gets a few good laughs on YouTube. We are seeing the demise of morality in this society – an alarming lack of respect for one another – and people like you are part of the problem because you either don’t see it or you don’t care.

I live in the city where the Assemblies of God headquarters is located. These evangelicals have pushed their religion to the point where they have become stalkers. They were instrumental in fighting the Blue law in this state. They did lose but were so outraged that now on Sundays after church services they head for Applebees in large groups, sit and harass the waitresses to tears over their sins of working on Sunday. Then leave no tip for the poor girl that just served 25 people their brunch because in their antiquated and warped beliefs dictate that working on Sunday is such an abomination and an insult to the church. I have my own religious beliefs and when I ask for the evangelical input on a subject, then and only then would I welcome their opinion. But until I ask for that opinion, leave me to believe what I want. Do I make myself clear? I don’t care what Bill thinks nor do I care what Pat Robertson or John Hagee thinks either. And I most certainly never cared for Jerry Falwells input either.

Tebow, like Perry, seems to think parading faith in public is the way to show how Godly one is. Jesus on the other hand, said that making a display of faith to the public was NOT what God wanted. He said to go into an inner chamber to pray and be heard by God. A public display means one’s only reward would be attention from other people. (Matt 6: 1-8) So whose example do you follow?

This will only increase his show’s ratings (Conservatives don’t watch him anyway).
His POINT, which I would think many Christians would agree with, is that it is silly and borderline offensive to involve GOD/JESUS in a SPORTS event (praying to win and/or giving God the credit if you do).
The implication being that God takes sides in such trivial matters and confers blessings on SOME and ignores the prayers of OTHERS. And Maher is simply pointing out the illogic of NOT assuming God had something to do with your or your team’s performance when you LOSE as well as when you WIN…hey, if Jesus shares responsibility for Tebow’s abilities and victories, He must ALSO share it for his weaknesses and losses, right?….I know, reasoning with Conservatives and Christians is impossible, lol).
Ultimately, what Tebow is doing is praying/bowing in public “so as to be seen by men” and glorify HIMSELF and his piety, not conducting his worship and thanksgiving in private, between himself and God, and simply allowing his “light to shine” in its own right and so glorify his God, as the Bible commands.

one thing that is perplexing about contemporary american liberalism is its disdain for religion… perplexing, because a large component of the american liberalism arose out of religion. the progressive era was heavily influenced by christian dogma (Jane Addams, Hull House, WCTU, etc.), and the civil rights movement was founded by and on religious principles. even the counter-culture movement of the 60′s was originally a folk-religion based movement. would bill maher mock MLK? he was pretty religious…and pretty in your face with it too? how about malcolm X, he was pretty religious, albeit american muslim and not christian. it is rather strange that the american left arose from religion only to evolve into something that not only ignores, but openly ridicules religion and paints religion as a primary cause of the world’s ills. so, again, would maher mock MLK for being an idiot christian?

There is a double standard in this country- You can slam any person at any time for being a Christian but you better not say anything about anyone else of faith. Makes me sick to see where we are as a nation. If you don’t agree with someone you don’t have to stoop to this level of attack to express yourself. Seems to me that he can’t come up with anything intelligent to say so he went this route.

Re: ” Liberals have a seething hatred for Christianity as it is completely antithetical to their belief system. Who said the rich would not inherit God’s kindgdom and who told his followers not even to ask for a coin for their purse. Conservatism if the antithesis of Christianity.

IN QUESTION: “Does Maher slam Islam, Buddhist, Judaism, Wicken?”
Yes, he DOES. He “slams” (challenges/questions/debunks) ALL religion as idiotic, illogical, and potentially dangerous.
Of course, he reserves special scorn for those religions which are the most radical/extreme/intolerant and/or violent (fundamentalism in Islam, Christianity, Judaism, etc..)
The fact is, WICCANS and BUDDHISTS don’t, generally, push their religion on anyone or actively work to bring about the end of the world. They live and let live and hold non-violence as a core tenet.
His message to ALL of us at the end of Religulous is “Grow up or die.”
Posted by: Raven | December 28, 2011, 1:48 pm 1:48 pm
Re: “Does Maher slam Islam, Buddhist, Judaism, Wicken?” Probably since he thinks all religion is silly – but not in this case because “Christians” like Tebow spend so much time showing off. Which is in direct opposition to the manner Jesus himself said Christian people should behave. (Read Matt 6:1-8, which is followed by the Lord’s prayer.)

Raven: You are deceived, Bill Maher does not even believe there is a God so he does not care that religion presumes to know what God thinks. And just because he equally insults and attacks other religions does not make him an equal opportunity bigot. I makes him a fool! Watch him if you want to because it is a free country but I will choose not to.

Politics has nothing to do with religion. I lean mostly toward liberal political ideas, but my life is devoted to Jesus Christ. Both political parties are largely immoral by biblical standards. So lets not assume people who believe in God are all like these irrational Tea party radicals, and please lets not assume that the majority of Liberals are unspiritual atheist bullies like this guy.

SERIOUSLY: “Raven: You are deceived, Bill Maher does not even believe there is a God so he does not care that religion presumes to know what God thinks.”
You make no sense. A principle concern of his is EXACTLY that the religious presume to know what “God” thinks and to take on faith that everyone who doesn’t share THEIR particular religion is wrong so they have the God-given right to impose their beliefs on others.
And actually, he has stated that he DOESN’T KNOW if there is a God or what that God thinks if it exists…a pretty humble and rational position, imo.
You guys might want to actually WATCH some of his work before you presume to know his arguments and positions.
“And just because he equally insults and attacks other religions does not make him an equal opportunity bigot.”
Really? What is YOUR definition of “equal oppourtunity”? FTR, rejecting your (or anyone elses’) religion and pointing out the inconsistencies, historical facts surrounding its development, and the tangible harm inflicted in its name is not being a “bigot”. It is simply rejecting a belief system you have concluded is INSANE. Get that? A BELIEF SYSTEM, not a person or entire group of people.

Good for Bill… I’m with him, I’m sick of people shoving their religious beliefs in my face… Why is it everyone has to think the way everyone else wants then too? Religion is a personal thing… Using it as Tebow does, for attention, is just wrong…

Maher is smart (and a coward) enough to know where the political correctness landmines are buried. Imus got pulled after an obviously stupid, trying-to-be-hip remark was made mentioning a protected group. Hank Williams mentions Hitler and he (and his song!) is banned by ESPN.
Equal opportunity offender my ear! He only goes after the unprotected species — even he does not have the courage to utter certain words and joke about certain groups — and since the penalties are so harsh, neither do any of us.

If mr bill doesn’t believe there’s a God, then why is he worried about it? Evidently what Tebow is doing is bothering him so bad that he has to run to his little twitter account and throw a tantrum. Funny thing how Christianity is the only religion that people have a problem with. Which only proves all the more that the bible is Nothing less than truth. (Jesus said we’d be persecuted for his sake). Furthermore, it really doesn’t make any difference whether bill maher (or anybody else for that matter) believes or not, it doesn’t make Jesus any less Holy. He’s still just as much God as he ever was. Let’s not forget he created us. He doesn’t need us, we need Him. So go ahead haters and doubters, persecute away…..

Bill is like all other celebrities as they start to fade away the only way to get back in the spotlight is to open month and make people angry. Terry CA, i don’t see tebow shoving his beliefs in anyone’s faith. I’m no tebow fan (heck, as an alabama fan, i couldn’t stand that guy when he was in college and i find his ultra-religiosity to be annoying…all the singing religious songs on the sideline, the prayer kneeling, etc.) but i’ve never seen him “shove” his ideas on anyone. i squarely fall in the camp of tebow doubters, actually, although i’m not a hater. i think he’s an overrated football player and i also share the belief that he’s a closet homosexual (i still can’t understand why anyone gets hung up on sexual preferences any longer, but that’s another issue). but i’ve been following the guy since he chose florida over bama in recruiting 7 years ago or so, and i’ve never come away with the impression that he’s forcing his beliefs on anyone. he speaks about it loudly and proudly, but i’ve never heard him forcing it on anyone. i think the problem is that among the most ardent american liberals, speaking early and often with conviction about religion is equivalent to spouting racist or xenophobic slurs. the fact (and it is a fact, whether people on the far left or far right want to admit it) is that the far left and far right are completely intolerant of anything that runs counter to their beliefs. the wild-eyed bible slappers aren’t satisfied that others “believe”, they insist that everyone be as wild-eyed as they (i don’t that from tebow) and the wildest of liberals can’t be satisfied that someone may support a woman’s right to choose on a legal basis even though they are morally opposed to abortion (but support the right to choose because they don’t think government should be telling women what to do with their bodies), they insist that said person must be pro-abortion and that anything less is a suspect pro-choice position. the far right and the far left are made up of the exact same kind of people…ideological nuts who believe their position is so righteous that no middle ground can exist.

Those of you who seem to think he only picks on Christians have no idea what you are talking about. Maher has made insulting comments and jokes about pretty much every group out there – get over yourself and accept that there will be plenty of people on this planet who do not agree wtih your way of thinking and there is nothing you can do about it. Grow up.

TOM MARINER: “Equal opportunity offender my ear! He only goes after the unprotected species — even he does not have the courage to utter certain words and joke about certain groups — and since the penalties are so harsh, neither do any of us.”
Again, go find a copy of ‘Religulous’ if you doubt that Maher takes on radical Islam and other fundamentalist religions.
He actually visits a Mosque in the Middle-East and interviews a radical cleric, asking some VERY pointed questions (and joking in voice-over that when the guy answers his cell phone, he is giving orders for him to be killed).
He challenges a Muslim woman on the street re’ the violent verses in her Holy Book, and doesn’t let her get away with equivicating about them.
He confronts a radical Muslim rapper in Europe about the violence in his lyrics and likewise refuses to let him evade the question of whether or not he supports the violent spread of Islam.
Coward my BUTT. Targets only Christians my EYE.
The thing the Right-wing Christians here can’t STAND is that he also challenges THEM, mocks THEIR religion as well, and demonstrates with facts that their religion is, in multuple ways, merely a re-telling of ancient myths, as contrived as any other.

Re: “So go ahead haters and doubters, persecute away…..” Now THAT’S funny. Jesus said his followers would be persecuted, true. He was talking about being beaten, jailed, tortured, murdered. To the modern version of American “Christian”, simply being teased or disagreed with is all the “persecution” they can scrape up so they go all drama queen over every little thing. “Oh, eek! An unkind word! Oh, the persecution! The horror!”

If Maher is saying this about Jesus, isn’t he contradicting his claim to be an atheist by admitting that Jesus exists? I have problems with “atheists” who spend more time thinking and talking about the God they say doesn’t exist than most believers do!
That said, the real and troubling issue here is getting overlooked. if Maher had said something about Muhammed (explicit deleted)-ing a Muslim football player, the Dalai Lama doing something to a Buddhist, or Moses fornicating a Jew, Maher would have been off HBO before the cyber ink on his tweet dried. The fact that we as a society ALLOW people to ridicule and lambaste someone for their religious beliefs is horrific, and we need to wake up. That is EXACTLY how Hitler got started–by making it fashionably cool to say negative things about the Jews. Next thing you know, it was not only okay to bad mouth them, it was also acceptable to arrest them and murder them.

Re: “OH thats right – tolerance is only expected from the Christians….” Oh, don’t be silly! The modern version of Christianity is so far removed from Jesus actual teaching that all anyone expects from most of the people who call themselves “Christian” is self-satisfaction and condemnation of others. Jesus said to “turn the other cheek” – he said to pray for those who persecute you (and the persecutions he was refering to were vicious and deadly, not just an insult). You people would have been first in line to reject Christ as he actually was, in favor of a fawning televangelist who tickeled your ears and emptied your wallets. Pathetic. Insults are not persecution.

All you idiots here slamming Maher simply make the point that Christians are the most intolerant people in the world. Rather than let something stupid like this go, you just HAVE to pounce on it. You just HAVE to get your collective panties in a bunch over it. And of course you prove once again that Christians don’t have a clue what a sense of humor is. My god people, this is Bill maher tweeting something! And just LOOK at the comments here. Maher is pretty much irrelevant these days. He once was witty and cutting edge. Now he is nothing more than a God-less fool who is often uninformed and spouts lies. I’m not sure what the title of his show is anymore, but it should be “I”m Irrelevant – And God Thanks me”.
I truly hope that Maher is fired – you see – had he dared say something like this about a Muslim, he would have been fired. We all know to mock Christians is a sanctioned sport of the left, but still invoking Hitler is grounds enough to demand his firing. Maher has confirmed that there is no such thing as leftist comedy. And for that reason he should find a home on the Comedy Channel where nothing is funny, but it is leftist.

Apparently religion gets folks riled up. I love the person who says clinical studies have proven that god exists and will judge you after death. And then says you don’t have to believe it, right after saying it’s been proven by a clinical study. Can you say circular (idiotic) logic? You Christians are one crazy gang, I gotta say. You can mock me all you want about my lack of religion. I’ll just laugh at you because you believe in magical stories made up by men and attributed to god. By the way, every religion has its divine-birth tale and also its resurrection tale. Saying emphatically that god exists goes no distance at all in making it true. And FTR, I am NOT all that big of a Maher fan…(I find several others funnier and more to my taste in comedy) I I simply happen to agree with his perspective on this issue and enjoy how easily he ticks people off by homing in on the lack of logic involved in their most sacred cows, lol.

Since when is it “funny” to mock someone’s, anyone’s, religious beliefs? It is, and always will be, offensive. Tim Tebow has every right to express his religious views in any setting he wants. But please, Mr. Mahar, don’t consider your disrespect of others beliefs to be comedy. I don’t hear of you producing many comedic remarks about atheists. By the way, I have a bachelor’s degree, so don’t write me off as an uneducated hick as many left-wing liberals tend to do to anyone who defends religious freedom in this country.

You never know…I was raised a Christian and actually went through the whole “born-again” thing in my early teens. I eventually grew out of it.
Of course, I was 15 or so when I did…old enough to have read the Bible for myself and mentally mature enough to say, “Wait a minute…this really doesn’t make any SENSE, and what these people are preaching/believe,(INCLUDING the whole “salvation through grace” and “eternal hellfire” things, not to mention their POLITICS), directly contradicts the actual teachings of Jesus!”
I still think Jesus (as an historical figure and/or one of the Great Avatars come to teach us that “Ye are gods”) is way cool. It’s so many of his followers that are wacked.

Whether you like him or not, Bill Maher did his job as a comedian, and a satirist. His job is to inflame the stupid, which there are a lot of stupid people reacting to this. The more you react to him, the more will he stay relevant as he will continue go after institutions most folks hold dear to them, and there’s a lot of sanctimony and hypocrisy that exist from people defending and protecting these institutions that Maher makes fun of. In fact, I’m willing to bet that the majority of people who are outraged over Maher’s comments are the same people who shamed Lowe’s into pulling their ads for the TLC series “American Muslim” which depicts normal Americans like you and I – The only difference is that they just happen to believe in a different religion. That’s the kind of religious hypocrisy that fuels Maher to do what he usual does.

Notreally12: “..he said nothing offensive about any religion he just asked questions.”
Yeah, questions like, “so you are saying to me that you will NOT reject violence in the name of Islam?” and “How do you reconcile this passage with your claim that you DO reject violence?”
And made fun of the Orthodox Jewish restrictions and the ways they devised to get around them on a technicallity IN FRONT of the Orthodox Jew he was interviewing.
He also condemned ALL religion as myth and delusion and as idiotic as believing in the Giant Flying Spagetti Monster (to paraphase)….you don’t thing most deeply religious individuals would find THAT offensive?
Perhaps what you are trying to get at is that he didn’t PERSONALLY ATTACK any religious PERSON (just questioned/challenged/mocked their RELIGIOUS BELIEFS). If so, you are absolutely correct. But that is a very different thing than what you seem to be arguing.

the rules. Maybe you should watch it again with somebody explaining it to you. He asked an ISLAM a question how is that mocking them or challenging them he got answer to his question. Every question he asked was answered. Maybe that’s why the movie flopped.

Bill Maher is not funny; he never has been. He is, in fact, an unctuous little jerk. His social commentary (the only way he seems to be able to draw attention to himself) is hackneyed and thus predictable.
But, in this country, even unctuous little jerks get to voice their opinion. I’m not going to “boycott” HBO because I like seeing the movies its shows. I needn’t “boycott” his show because I never watch it anyway. I wish they’d get rid of him.
And for the record, I’m an athiest.

Haha, the tweet isn’t nearly as bad as anti-religion jokes I hear from Christians on a regular basis. What a bunch of hypocrites. I grew up in a Catholic household and this is weak compared to the filth that comes out of the mouths of some of the more devout. He merely pointed out that praying failed Tebow in a big way, while Satan is engaging in the act of tebowing to get the Bills to win. Not that funny, but not outrageous by any stretch of the imagination.

You Christians are one crazy gang . . . tiny minority of delusional self-righteous people . . . filthy rich top 1% liberal, and his ignorant followers . . . “ Wow. The things people will say to and about others. Have we no sense of common decency or respect for the views and beliefs of others? How about live and let live? Believe in whoever you want or no one at all; as long as it’s not hurting me or anyone else, I don’t care. Grumpopolis has it right: the far right and the far left are made up of the exact same kind of people…ideological nuts who believe their position is so righteous that no middle ground can exist.” The wing nut fringe ruins it for the rational and respectful—in any group. I never really thought Bill Maher was that great a comedian. I love a good left/right debate but sometimes things do get out-of-hand. Maher went to far. When talking of one’s religious beliefs, one can overstep bounds that should be left in place. I don’t care if Maher is an atheist or not. I don’t know how this world started but it is a little fair fetched to believe my ancestors crawled out of the sea and were single celled organisms. There is too much to explain – though I be Maher thinks he can try. Whatever the truth, I believe in a higher power, one that definitely deals in karma. I don’t want to sound like a religious fanatic, by Maher’s day is coming. You can’t get away with that kind of trash and there still be peace in the cosmos. I believe God is love, He created us, gave us all we need to survive and left us to do it. We have failed miserably. Tebow, I am a long time Gator fan even with a small Gator tattoo, and while I am not as zealot as you are, stay strong to your beliefs – they are what make you, you. No one truly knows just a lot of educational guesses. Who knows? To you Maher, make something strike you in the head and open your eyes to the truth of creationism and to Tebow, you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. Jesus Christ was a man that lead many to water but not all drank. You are in good company honey.

Does anyone else find it ridiculous that after all Bill Maher has said against religion over the years and even after his movie “Religulous” Tim Tebow is off limits? It just shows this country’s lopsided view of the world. And as usual it’s an over reaction and distraction that the politicians, pundits and powerful love.
Was the comment really that vile? Oh, I’m sorry…did we replace the word “praying” with “Tebowing”? Maher sent it on…gasp…Christmas Eve! First of all he’s an atheist so it doesn’t even mater to him. Second of all why do we need to watch football and pay attention to meaningless tweets on Christmas Eve?
Get over yourselves!

I am not a Christian conservative, but I find Bill Mahers comments completely inappropriate. If such comments were made toward any other religion, the outpouring would be five times this. In addition, he is not the first guy to pray during sports. Happens in baseball all the time…how many times have we seen football players praying in a huddle? I saw a guy on ESPN last night thanking the Lord after the basketball game. The thing is that the media latched on due to his great skills and made it as if he was the only Christian athlete there is! Mr. Tebow has stated he knows God is not winning him games…Mr. Tebow has energized his players and is just an overall good guy. Bill Maher on the other hand is just a bitter, angry man who hates anyone that does not believe in the same ideals as he does. He certainly has the right to express his opinion, but sometimes one should take th high road and keep their joke to themselves. Oh, and I did cancel HBO…they haven’t had good programming in years, so this was just the last reason I needed.

Mr. Tebow should remember that when you pray, don’t be a hypocrite, for they love to pray standing in the churches and on the streetcorners, so that people will see them. They have their reward already. But you, when you pray, should go to your room and close your door and pray in secret, and your Father, who sees you in secret, will reward you openly.
Not my words, these are the words of Jesus.
Tim Tebow is a hypocrite. He has his reward right here on Earth.

I see how, to the masses, believers and nonbelievers (in any faith overall) it can seem unnecessary for Tebow to pray practically anywhere … But for those of you assuming he’s praying for a win – that’s just beyond presumptuous. How do you know he isn’t praying for protection of the players on that field? If you’ve ever had a friend, family member, or child die of spinal cord complications following a tackle, you might appreciate anyone who even appears to be so attentive.

I’m canceling HBO. Thanks Bill!

I too am a “non believer” and have been for most of my 44 years. In my eyes, this is a publicity stunt. Otherwise, where were Mahers personal attacks when Reggie White, Kurt Warner and the likes were hailing praises to their Almighty? Any pub is good pub! Maher’s bowing, or Tebowing, to the pressures for the sake of ratings. If only Tebow were of color …

Bill Maher should know that god is too busy worrying about gay marriage to spend time on football.

Is this the same Bill Maher who was charged twice for beating his girlfriend?
Is this the same Bill Maher who was fired from ABC for agreeing with one of his guests that the 9/11 hijackers were heroes?
Yeah…he is definitely someone we should be paying attention to!
He not controversial. He’s a five-year-old with anger issues. Ignore him.

It’s positively despicable that Bill Maher is able to defame the Catholic Religion and Tim Tebow on a television platform of HBO. How dare him use the disgusting foul language in the same sentence of our Lord Jesus Christ. I’d like to see him use these same tactics with other religions and see how popular he would be. If this is how he needs to make his living, I feel sorry for him; because he’s a lost soul and a disgrace to the entertainment industry. HHBO should be ashamed of themselves for allowing him to use their media as a venue for this type of blasphemy.

@JIMBO: Since when do liberals (flaming or otherwise) get a free pass with the media? You have an entire network (FOX News) devoted to right-wing propaganda and the other networks aren’t far behind, including ABC. Since 2008 every Tea Party rally has been covered like it’s the latest comeing of Christ with hoards of reporters even if only 30 Tea Baggers show up, while left-wing progressive rallies drawing hundreds of people don’t even get covered!
I used to be a newspaper reporter and believe me, the media is definitely conservatively biased. Bigots like you just don’t like it when any religious freak like Tebow or some other right-wing nut job gets criticized at all (“Better a corrupt conservative than an honest liberal!”) or any “liberal” even is covered in the news.
And news flash: great athletes don’t make great human beings. Tebow can be commended for his athletic ability, but that doesn’t make him immune from criticism of his religious or social views. That’s what Freedom of Speech is all about, you moron. Though I know conservatives think Freedom of Speech applies only to them, like the pigs in George Orwell’s Animal Farm:
“All animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others…”
Suck it.

Honestly people? Yes the constitution allows citizens freedom of religion and that includes atheism (if you view it as such) . But if you openly mock someone’s religion, you open yourself up to ridicule and mocking, and you relinquish your rights (metaphorically). Tebow has every right show his faith in God publicly, just like Maher can show his views on Twitter. The only difference is Maher chose to make a mockery of the situation. A lot of these comments say Maher is an intellectual man, and he probably is, but overall his comment was not very wise.
