George Michael outside his home today.

After weeks in the hospital, George Michael is home for the holidays.

“I’m very weak but I feel amazing” he told reporters outside his house in north London today. Michael said it was “touch and go for a while” and added: “It was by far the worst month of my life, but I’m incredibly, incredibly fortunate to be here.”

Michael admitted that he and his reps “played down” the seriousness of his illness.

“I didn’t want to worry my fans too much and I’m really sorry I couldn’t contact them in any way before now but I was really not in any state to,” he said. Of his doctors, he said, ”They spent three weeks keeping me alive basically. I don’t want to take you through all of it because some of it I want to protect my family from.”

Michael said he also plans to refund the fans who bought tickets to shows he had to cancel because of his illness.

The former Wham! front man, 48, returned to England from an Austrian hospital earlier today. He sought medical treatment in November after falling ill while on tour. He was moved to an intensive care unit because of the “severity and extension” of his illness, according to his doctors. According to a statement on his website, his illness was caused by a viral infection and a high temperature.

He does have a beautiful voice. Probably one of the few famous singers left who don’t need autotune during what is supposed to be a live concert.
