Late last week, Gwyneth Paltrow launched Goop City, an iPhone and iPad app based on her life advice newsletter/website, Goop. Right now the $3.99, more than 20MB app (so you can’t download it without syncing your iPhone with your computer, hello high maintenance) boasts one city guide: New York.
And what a Goopy city New York is. Paltrow’s ideal day includes stopping by Odegard, “One of the best carpet stores,” where you can spend $123 per square foot for a pure Himalayan wool rug with special vegetable dyes.
The former macrobiotic diet devotee also shares more than a dozen of her favorite restaurants (as well as those of a New York City driver named Rudy Gonzalez) including Five Guys Burgers and Fries, a chain that she claims originated in Manhattan (it actually started in Washington, DC). “Anytime I’m driving,” she writes, “I try to stop by for a burger and some fries.”
Paltrow’s inconsistencies are cute. She describes the SoHo Cuban restaurant Cafe Habana as “Very quiet but sometimes very noisy.” So, too, are her notions of what people might use her app for — there’s a health section that features contact info for acupuncturists, plastic surgeons, holistic healers and “the OBGYN who delivered Moses,” her son.
Snark aside, Goop City is sort of the green tea version of Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations” (and in this tortured analogy, “No Reservations” would be bourbon). It’s like a Not for Tourists guide for people who enjoy 18th century European furniture and juice fasts.
