The NFL on Sunday night confirmed what had been rumored for two months: Madonna will headline the halftime show of the 2012 Super Bowl. She will take the stage to perform at halftime of Super Bowl 46 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on February 5. She will work with Cirque du Soleil on a concept for the gig.

The announcement was made during Sunday night’s broadcast of the New Orleans Saints-Detroit Lions game on NBC.

This will be Madonna’s first time performing at the Super Bowl. She was scheduled to sing her cover of “American Pie” at the 2000 Super Bowl, but she cancelled the appearance due to a conflict in her recording schedule. She is currently recording an album.

The Black Eyed Peas performed at this year’s edition of the Super Bowl.

Ok..That’s disgusting!!! What’s family friendly about that? She’s not even remotely relevant to anything current or worthwhile. She had her day. Let’s move on… Stupidest decision EVER!!! Won’t be watching @ halftime.

proof positive that the nfl is run by the gay elite

Something wrong with you posters? Or isit the same person using different names? Madonna is the best live act of all time, love her or not that is a fact. You must have never been to a Madonna concert becuase your clearly stupid.

I think the NFL is trying to cover their butts for the last 9 years ever since the Janet Jackson “wardrobe malfunction” fiasco. They want to book stars that seem more tame than more contemporary acts like Lady Gaga (anyone remember the — yawn — Paul McCartney halftime show?), and unfortunately I think the masses want more of these contemporary acts. The NFL needs to understand the Super Bowl is more than just the game or even the commercials — it’s an embodiment of the entire entertainment package. It’s these kind of miscues from NFL officials that will push acts like Lady Gaga to say, for instance, the 2042 Super Bowl when they will have had their day and no longer appear as relevant to contemporary culture.

PERFECT CHOICE. And to all you whiners posting negative comments — most women who don’t even watch the game… 1) The woman has remaned relavant for almost 30 years (and counting) – unlike Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Tom Petty, Janet Jackson, none of those clowns had a hit in years the year they performed at the Superbowl, 2) Puts on THE BEST show in the industry, hands down, 3) half time is about GREAT music and performance, not wholesome goodness. Sounds like you’ll be at church that night anyway so it shouldn’t bother you who’s performing.

And ya.. the NFL is run by the “Gay Elite” and this is a conspiracy. What a closeted moron. Madonna has sold more than 300 million records worldwide and is recognized as the world’s top-selling female recording artist of all time by the Guinness World Records. She’s the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century and the second top-selling female artist in the United States, behind Barbra Streisand, with 64 million certified albums. In 2008, Billboard magazine ranked Madonna at number two, behind only The Beatles, on the Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists, making her the most successful solo artist in the history of the Billboard chart. Oh no… she doesn’t meet the criteria. IDIOTS.

Madonna!? Who wants to see Madona? What an insult.! Couldn’t they find anyone else? Another half-time show I’ll be leaving the room to go do something productive with the time.

Oh, too bad. I always prefer to see a real band perform.

I’ve read two articles and accompanying comments, one on Rosie and the other on Madonna. Why are you all so hostile, angry and quick to judge? What is happening to our society, nobody has anything nice to say anymore…are we jealous? Let’s practice kindness please.

Posted by: Kim | December 5, 2011, 7:28 pm 7:28 pm

I like Madonna, she is better than all the other cheap knockoffs. She is the original, and the only other artists that could match her live performance are prince, MJ and Janet. They all already performed so now it’s madonna’s turn.

Posted by: johndoe | December 5, 2011, 9:12 pm 9:12 pm

FIRST of all, I’ve never watched the Super Bowl half-time show (I did manage to find Prince’s performance on youtube – SUPERB!) but I will definitely be tuning in to see Madonna perform (especially if M.I.A. is guest act, which seems likely given their recent collaboration). She is a brilliant performer and she is the original female pop “goddess”. Every single female pop act you can think of from the past 20 years – they owe a debt to her. Her song lyrics (which can be of the sexual nature – there’s no denying that. But what about the sexual nature of the songs performed by all of the above mentioned rock bands at previous half-time shows?) I think she’s going to surprise most people (Hello! Working with CIRQUE DU SOLEIL!) and maybe win over some who are not completely blinded by their prejudices.

Half time shows, just by there very nature are beyond lame. Whether it’s Madonna or Up with People, the sole purpose of the Half Time show is to provide time for the viewer to take a dump.

MADONNA is a legend… A great performer… She sells out concerts all around the Globe… The Lady Gagas, Rihannas and Beyonces can’t fill stadiums around the world because they don’t know how to deliver a great performance… She was automatically inducted in the ROCK and ROLL HALL OF FAME… Still releasing albums that go #1 in at least 35 countries… Evolved into a fine director… Can your favorite Diva even match that? Learn how to respect a LIVING LEGEND that is MADONNA!

HAS BEEN? Her career is almost 30 years now… Let us see if your Diva idols of today can even last that long…

Hey did anyone notice in the video the guy asked the question “Do you think she’ll go old school and sing living on a prayer…” Did she do a version of Bon Jovi’s song?

Posted by: Richard | December 8, 2011, 4:36 pm 4:36 pm

Shouldnt we give her a chance? i mean yea i understand what happened in the past but she mite just pull offf a really great halftime show.. and as for her clothes umm well if you dont want your kid seeing her dressed then dont let them.. they are your kids and you have controll over them right?

What about Arcade Fire?

Posted by: Brad House | December 10, 2011, 3:32 am 3:32 am

ARE YOU SERIOUS! Madonna? SHE’s an OLD HAS BEEN! WHO picked her? Usually I look forward to some really good up to date intertainment for half time. Guess that will be my Q for a bathroom break. Hope we don’t run out of water at that time.

Posted by: l.g. | December 10, 2011, 5:04 pm 5:04 pm

I’ve never heard Madonna at ANY tailgate partys. The NFL comission, or whoever makes these decisions should really lay off the crack pipe.

Posted by: Danny | December 17, 2011, 1:18 pm 1:18 pm

Madonna will deliver A SHOW, better than any of the recent SB acts. Old white dudes and that very crappy Black Eyed Peas last year!

Posted by: Cliff | December 22, 2011, 4:00 am 4:00 am

I agree with Tony… They couldn’t have made a better choice… Finally, a true legend on the stage that can really put on a show.

Posted by: chuck | January 2, 2012, 5:21 am 5:21 am

Madonna is a fantastic choice for halftime. This is going to be the best half time show since Prince. Madonna is the biggest selling female artist in the world so it makes sense for her to do the half time show.

Posted by: Gina | January 7, 2012, 3:24 pm 3:24 pm

It appears that some members of the public are still angry at her for her 2003 American Life song…

Posted by: Aron | January 8, 2012, 5:55 pm 5:55 pm

I thought it couldnt get any worse after the black eyed peas last year, but it already has!! what happened after the epic run of tom petty, bruce springsteen, and the who? I WONT BE WATCHING!

Posted by: Adam | January 8, 2012, 10:52 pm 10:52 pm

Another half-time show I won’t be watching. There could be worse such as Lady Gaga – Thought they would have learned from last year’s. BTW, Madonna has never been a legend in my book.

Posted by: kat | January 12, 2012, 1:58 pm 1:58 pm

Not crazy about Madonna being half-time show. Another good time to refill my plate and glass. Could be worse – Lady Gaga, Beyonce. Too bad they don’t plan for a more family-type show. There can be entertaining shows – without going to trash.

Posted by: lew | January 12, 2012, 2:02 pm 2:02 pm

BTW – Tony – there are a LOT of women who watch the game! Who do you think helps put together the super bowl parties? And us church-goers watch the game too!

Where are they shooting the Half Time Show, a nursing home?

Posted by: matt | January 14, 2012, 10:03 pm 10:03 pm

I think it will be interesting to see what Madonna has in store, i cant believe all the people on here who are bashing her.

All the fine and old ladies you all are talking about are all fake…PERIOD.
Get some real talent that writes thier songs, not some plastic ho.

NFL just took a dive…..

Amazing how IGNORANT people are in this country… What does being GAY have anything to do with Madonna…And better than freaking Aerosmith,Rolling Stones…Glad too see something different… Watch out Homophobes your best friend could be ONE !!!!!!!!! Wishing Madonna a great show, and a good super bowl, isn’t that what really matters… We really are so judgemental, can we just get along as a country….

Posted by: Lefty | January 20, 2012, 6:40 pm 6:40 pm

Since when does Madonna sing “Living on a Prayer”? I thought that was Bon Jovi. Oh, maybe he meant “Like a Prayer”. If you’re going to report on a world-wide star, at least know the name of her hits. Oh, also in reply to John, being gay has a lot to do with Madonna. Don’t you know gays love her? I’m a fag hag and every gay I know likes Madonna. Who cares. Got nothing to do with it, really. Actually I may go to a gay super bowl party! Anyway, obviously this reporter is not gay, or he would have known the name of her song.

Posted by: Adrienne | January 21, 2012, 3:00 pm 3:00 pm

The news guys calls ones of songs ‘living on a prayer’ wow..isn’t that Bon Jovi haha!

Oh heck yes! I love Madonna!

What about a Hoosier like John Cougar? They have only been picking the getto trash for the last few years.

Posted by: Tom | January 22, 2012, 7:57 pm 7:57 pm

Well Madonna has certainly earned her place in music history. Lets say we give her a chance to perform and evaluate the halftiime show after her performance. She does have just a little experience with live shows.

Posted by: Tracy | January 22, 2012, 10:56 pm 10:56 pm

Well folks, this is what our “Entertainment” industry has come too. Madonna, wether being a good performer or not is a HAS BEEN. She is really quite discusting and although I will be rooting for my Giants I will NOT be watching the Halftime show!

Posted by: surgtech09 | January 26, 2012, 12:46 pm 12:46 pm

Really, Madonna WTH?!?!? I know my family will definitely not be watching her jumping around in skimpy clothes. Why didn’t they pick someone who matters, at least it wasn’t some ghetto crap where every other word is a curse word and can’t even make out what there saying. I vote for Aerosmith or Toby Keith.

Posted by: Taylor | January 29, 2012, 7:35 pm 7:35 pm

Why this old hag? Nobody wants to see some old saggy skinned women running around in skimpy clothes. Why not Toby Keith or Aerosmith. At least someone who matters.

Posted by: Taylor | January 29, 2012, 7:38 pm 7:38 pm

Well I can’t say I’m surprised, they usually pick artists that appeal to the older generation and for people who aren’t watching the game FOR THE GAME. I’m a 23 year old heterosexual male that loves football and madonna does NOT appeal to me. You can say shes one of the greatest female artists of all time and that’s great but she IS old news and she definitely is not what I think of when I think football. Then you add the tacky circus act in and make it even worse..

Posted by: Giants12 | January 30, 2012, 1:46 pm 1:46 pm

Madonna is the most successful female artist of all time (britney, mariah, gaga, shakira, janet, etc…. wish to have what she has achieved) she is considered a true legend along with MJ, The Beatles, Elvis Presley…all her records have surpassed the US market in all its splendor.
There’s no such stupid thing as “Madonna is only relevant for old gay men …..bla bla bla” so why in most of her tours do we se lots of young men of all types of sexual orientations ? Believe me….I’ve been in 10 Madonna concerts and there’s a lot of variety in the audience…and all of them are cheering her up and having an excellent time….Maybe Madonna is not the most talented artist, but SHE IS TALENTED AND SHE HAS BEEN ON TOP WORLDWIDE FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS…..Scandals and intelligence for buisness are not enough for that, you need talent as an entertainer.

Anyway…it’s fun how important Madonna is for haters like you. Your comments only seem to be the revenge of the frustration and envie you feel inside.
Why many americans are so jealous of someone else’s success ?
Anyway…..I can tell that Madonna has achieved much more than all of you in your entire life.

Anyway….she would be very thankful with you if she read your comments, because you are giving promotion to her.

Who is anyone to judge and mistaken it for your opion! What nerves! I do agree she is a great performer and others of them after are too! Beyonce will be up there where she is for sure! But the only problem I do see is that this is a family event so hopefully she will do this tastefully. Her concerts don’t have children there! Other than that they picked a winner!!! Love u Madonna go get’em girl!!!

Posted by: peAceplz | February 4, 2012, 2:27 pm 2:27 pm

Seriously???? Taylor, you were the last ‘basher’ (or, in my opinion, ignorant) person who said that Tob Keith and Aerosmith are ‘news’ and Madonna is ‘old news’… Funny, but last I saw, the woman is all over the NEWS… Even when she just released a new song and video that has been playing in every radio station that has relevancy amongnst youngsters… For being a ’23yo HeTeRoSeXuAl male… You reeeeaaaaally have a lot to learn… And to call the Cirque Du Soleil ‘tacky’ really shows you have NEVER left home in God-knows-where you are…

I have been in may concerts and have seen thousands of performance. But no other match what Madonna brings to the stage. And for those of you who have an ounce of taste, don’t go ‘take a dump’ or ‘go grab some more food/beer’… Maybe you can learn a thing of two about a fantastic perfomance, if you dare to raise the bar of what you might think is good… After all, having good taste isn’t for everyone…

I know of at least 100 people who are JUST watching because of Madonna.

composed by sbsbsb0416 I have witnessed that sensible real estate agents almost everywhere are starting to warm up to FSBO Marketing and advertising. They are noticing that it’s not only placing a poster in the front yard. It’s really in relation to building interactions with these traders who at some point will become purchasers. So, once you give your time and energy to supporting these suppliers go it alone — the “Law involving Reciprocity” kicks in. Interesting blog post.
