Karl Lagerfeld Says Adele is “Too Fat”

As the head designer for Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld is one of the world’s most influential figures in fashion — but he’s definitely not a world leader when it comes to tact. Lagerfeld told the publication Metro that he is a fan of Adele, but isn’t a fan of her appearance.

“The thing at the moment is Adele,” says Lagerfeld. “She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice.”

Ironically, Lagerfeld himself was once overweight — he lost close to 100 pounds in 13 months back in 2001 by following a special diet. Wonder how he would have felt if some world-famous designer had called him “too fat.”

Karl Lagerfeld is a nasty old man, an arrogant, blinkered egomaniac. Millions of fashion obsessed neurotics allow him to dictate style to them, so perhaps they just get what they deserve. But Adele looks great. I hope dear old Karl has to spend eternity glued in one of his own size zero creations.

What an out-of-touch, foul old man. Adele is gorgeous, and certainly not “too fat” in my book. She has an average shape, she’s curvy, and she’s beautiful. And really, who asked him anyway? No one. Sounds like he just likes to hear his own nasty voice. I sincerely hope that women out there take the things he says for what they are – vile spew, nothing resembling the truth.

Too fat for what? To be a successful singer with an awesome voice? Not everyone has to look like a fashion model, Karl.

If someone had called this man a little too gay, you would have had an uprising and a lawsuit against the party that did so. Will a movement to defend people of size have to be formed before the media is afraid to stop printing to much of this vicious negativity? Adolescents are suffering through weight issues more than ever now and constantly reinforced by the media that big is bad. Get a grip and find something more positive to put in the spotlight!

Looking the way he does? Maybe he should keep his opinion to himself! Adele is awesome, leave her alone!

And he looks like an old leather shoe.

This man means nothing to me or many others in the REAL world. He “LOOKS” like a crack-head-has-been. WHO cares who he is in the fashion world… big woop. I feel sorry for his sorry tail because he’s full of hate and misunderstanding of what REAL woman are supposed to look like…. and besides HOW THE HECK can he give an opinion on how a woman is supposed to look like anyway??? He’d flippin GAY!!!

He is just a little freak…look at him. I would rather be voluptuous, beautiful and extremely talented than superficial, freakish looking and frankly just a mean. mean. old. old. old. ugly. ugly. freakish little troll that he is.

Well, of course she is! She is bound to get even larger with her new found wealth and rich lifestyle! What does it profit a person if they gain the world and lose a few arteries?

and you’re too ugly!

Does anyone really care what Lagerfeld thinks? I didn’t think so. He’s so yesterday.

KL wouldn’t know what to do with a woman if she sat on his face and rode him like it was then end of the world. He is repulsed by women with curves because they are not men which is what he likes. It burns me up that dried up old queens who like men get to dictate what is beautiful about women and fashion. KL has zero credibility to critique woman

How quickly we forget what a comment of “too fat” or plump can do to someone!! It killed one of the world’s best and most unique voices in Karen Carpenter!!! Adele has a beautiful voice and if she were any different, it wouldn’t be the same.

Excellent point Terry. I forgot about KC. What an insensitive jerk KL is.

Gay men are concerned only with rights for themselves. They can be the biggest haters on the planet, and certainly the biggest sexist creeps.

Posted by: Jif | February 7, 2012, 3:12 pm 3:12 pm

This old idiot should stick to judging other gay men in their undewear. It’s obvious that he has no clue what a real woman is or should look like. Adele looks healthy as a woman should.

Oooh what does that old Vampire know.

She looks like she has lost weight this past year.

He’s bitter because he’s old and insecure. Adele you are fabulous, don’t listen to that old queen.

ABC News practices bad journalism.

ABC News censors legitimate comments about the article above without rhyme or reason, and without explanation. And they also censor comments about their censoring of comments.

This comment will appear briefly and then they will censor it.

Makes you wonder what they censor in their “news.” ABC = Always Being Censored.

I was censored too, and my comment was totally appropriate. They always go in and delete valid comments on this site, it’s very creepy. I only came here by accident today. We don’t watch ABC Disney anymore either. They don’t respect their viewers or their online readers, and it doesn’t seem like they can afford to drive more people away.

I don’t think that Karl was mean for saying his mind. He IS on of the most polished fashion icons to this day. So what if he is a bit spoiled by his colleagues. He works with models of lower sizes than Adele and has more than enough to say honest critiques about what he is asked. Give him a break for god’s sakes!

Posted by: Vladislav | February 7, 2012, 9:14 pm 9:14 pm

Omg! Kill Karl for telling the truth or having an opinion. Especially the same one most of you would have if Adele wasn’t famous and cut you off in traffic or in the line at McDonald’s.

Big is beautiful… just not to Karl who lives in the fantasy world of size 0 Chanel beauties. If Karl is sexist (which he is not!) you ppl are equally disgusting for the homophobic slurs and incendiary terms I’ve read here. Who is Karl to judge women? Sexually, incredulous. But when it comes to a woman’s size/appearance… who is more credible than the top designer in the world. Who? The notion that a man has to have sex with women to have a valid opinion of them is as sexist and misogynistic as they come. Great job defending them!

FYI Adele calls herself fat in interviews all the time. She says she is fat and happy and is happy calling herself fat.

Mispronouncing his name is rather uncouth and unworldly as well. Would you say?

Posted by: Ladybug | February 8, 2012, 5:19 pm 5:19 pm

Until this article hit the press I had never heard of Karl Lagerfeld. I have heard of Adele and own a great many of her songs.

Maybe he made the tactless comment to get himself back in the news.

Posted by: Robert | February 8, 2012, 11:02 pm 11:02 pm

First off, his comment probably was taken out of context. What he was probably referring to is that she is too fat to model. Which, if you look at her, she is.
That said, I take issue with all of the “real women” comments that are made. A REAL woman knows how to eat properly, exercise and take care of her body. Anyone who equates being overweight or obese with being real is simply trying to cover up for the fact that she has no self control. Grow up, look in the mirror, put the ice cream down and go to the gym.

Posted by: C | February 9, 2012, 7:38 am 7:38 am

She is a gorgeous WOMAN. Another sad story of a supposed fashion icon teaching people that starving yourself into unnatural, bone-popping out mode is the only way to be a noteworthy success. I suppose we should understand though. Carl Lagerfeld has to throw out those comments. Saying something stupidly childish is just part of the deal when you are an old man aging in the land of celebrity. So here we have a guy hanging on to anything that resembles youthfulness with the crippling clutches of death that is seeping in through his botox. Enough with your oily looking silver ponytail and indoor sunglasses, and studded leather gloves- we get your obvious efforts to be a style trademark, except now, thanks to comments such as these, we can see the transparency- a withering old man scared to death of loosing the spotlight.

Sayeth the misogynistic little cretin responsible for holding millions of women in anorexic bondage for the sake of a designer label.

Posted by: Cheryl Tamburri | February 9, 2012, 3:14 pm 3:14 pm

Karl, is he married?
Or has he ever been?
Who is his lover?
Male or female?
how does he really like them?

Posted by: Jonveille Boris | February 9, 2012, 9:21 pm 9:21 pm

Seriously? Are you all blind? She IS fat. That is not an insult, it’s a fact. And talking about holding women to anorexic standards in relation to this is just stupid. Women ARE held to anorexic standards, but Adele, beautiful and talented as she is, does not represent “real” women. We’re not plus sized and we’re not size zero. We’re right in the middle. Models are too skinny. She’s too fat. Both are unhealthy and unattractive. Sorry you don’t like to hear that but silly to get mad over what is.

Posted by: M | February 9, 2012, 10:45 pm 10:45 pm

She is not too fat…and Jonveille Boris, I have no idea what you look like..but I for one, am sick and tired of this weight obsessed world we live in. It’s absolutely insane. Humans are not all supposed to look exactly the same.. In the animal kingdom, members come in all shapes and sizes..Take dogs for example..There are stocky, short bulldogs and tall lean greyhounds. There are big Saint Bernards and tiny chiuauas. Adele is absolutely beautiful! There are many men who prefer a full bodied, curvy woman and that’s what she is..I am sorry…you are just plain wrong….She is NOT obese..she has the most stunning face…and she is a singer, not a dancer or gymnast..this foolish obsession with people’s size, unless they are a virtual skeleton or morbidly obese, is really getting to be a tired but standard way for people to bring others down a peg. I don’t think this young woman would be bothered by such pettiness…she seems to have a good sense of self and to be comfortable in her body…and wow…she can sing her arse off, can’t she??
