Pepsi might be on to something, after a prank video they posted on YouTube with Jeff Gordon scored a whopping 7 million views.
In the video, Nascar ace Gordon dons a costume and gives a car salesman the test ride of his life, all while filming the man’s reactions with his Pepsi-cam.
The salesman reacts with what looks like utter shock, then relief at the end when he learns that it was Jeff Gordon driving all along.
“Wanna do it again?” the salesman asks.
But is any of this real? A Pepsi spokesperson told ABC News that a stunt man actually did some of the driving.
Refusing to reveal whether the salesman is an actor, she stressed his reactions are “100 percent genuine.”
“I started to suspect on the second viewing,” said auto enthusiast Travis Okulski of Jalopnik.com, noticing rubber marks on the ground.
“I make of that that there are multiple takes. I know the salesman was an actor from my source on the set,” he said.
Tweets online suggest that most people don’t care whether it’s real or fake.
“No matter what, it’s still exposure. Even if people are talking about it in a negative way, they’re still gonna be talking about it,” said Adweek’s Emma Bazilian.
“I don’t know how much longer you can keep this up without people realizing they’re being tricked, but for now it’s getting a lot of hits and that’s what the brands care about,” she said.
This isn’t the first time Pepsi has gotten into prank advertising. The company has done it before with “Uncle Drew,” the Cleveland Cavalier’s Kyrie Irving, who upstaged young kids on the basketball court.
