The girl, wearing a green dress and gold headband, was clutching a red flower. William approached her and asked if the flower was for him, but the girl pulled the flower away.

"Is that for Kate? Yes, you want to give it to her," he said, according to video of encounter.

The prince tried again.

"You look very pretty. Do you want a kiss?" he asked.

Onlookers sounded their approval of the offer, but as soon the prince leaned in to complete his task, the little girl moved, twisting her body and hiding her face.

William, who awaiting the birth of his first child, laughed and appeared to take it all with good grace.

The girl , identified in a Sky News report as 4-year-old Shona, had been waiting for hours to kiss the prince but was suddenly overcome by shyness, said her mother, Karen Ritchie.

Shona had even worn her best princess outfit for the event, complete with a crown, Ritchie said, according to Sky News.
