Kelly Rowland is airing her "Dirty Laundry" in a controversial new single, a bittersweet tale in which she addresses abuse by an ex-boyfriend and her complicated relationship with superstar Beyonce.

While a line of lyrics "While my sister was on stage/I was enraged" has spurred headlines that Rowland was jealous of Queen Bey, Rowland says it was all "misunderstood."

"The crazy thing about that … song is that I was going through my own personal battle. So when [Beyonce's] doing her thing, I'm over thinking: 'What am I going to do next? What do I want to do with my life?'" Rowland said today on " Good Morning America." "I'm going through this relationship. I'm smiling for people in public and in so much pain, and thinking about what I want for myself and just wanting more."

The deeply personal song also touches on Rowland's past with a physically abusive ex-boyfriend, and Rowland says the responses she's received from fans have been powerful.

"I went in the studio… and we were all just in a place where we just wanted to be honest. … I just think people should know what's underneath," Rowland said. "So far when I've shared this song with people live, so many girls come up to me and they have their own stories and they have these incredible stories of where they've been and how far they've come. I just am so happy that I am being a part of a moment that can help them. I love that about music."

"The song turned into something so positive for me in the end, and I'm so happy that it did," Rowland added.

While the Grammy winning R&B star, whose new album is called "Talk a Good Game," has come a long way from her "Destiny's Child" days, she says she was giddy collaborating with Beyonce and Michelle Williams again on a new song, "You Changed."

"We were in three different places, and I sent the girls the song and they sent it back to me and it had all of our voices on it. I'm sitting up there listening and I go, 'Oh my god, we sound so good together.' B [Beyonce] hits me and she's like, 'We sound so good together,'" Rowland recalls. "You forget after it's been so long. I'm so glad we had the opportunity to join Beyonce when she killed it at Super Bowl and we got to have that album together… and them being a part of my record. I'm so grateful."
