Lady Gaga has had a number of unforgettable moments at the MTV Video Music Awards, so it's no surprise that she's chosen to make her big return to the stage at this year's ceremony.
According to Gaga's social networking site LittleMonsters.com, Mother Monster will give the world premiere performance of the first single from her upcoming album ARTPOP at the VMAs on August 25. The single is due August 19, and it may or may not be called "Applause" - it hasn't been confirmed yet.

Unless she takes the stage between then and now, the VMAs will mark Gaga's first full-scale public performance since she was forced to cancel her Born This Way Ball tour to undergo hip surgery. She did sing the national anthem at a New York City gay pride event in June, but that was just an a cappella performance at a podium, not a full-fledged production number.

Gaga's notorious VMA moments include the wearing of the infamous "meat dress," hanging from the ceiling while dripping fake blood during a performance of "Paparazzi" and singing "You and I" dressed as her male alter ego Jo Calderone.
