Maybe Simon Cowell has finally softened now that the "X Factor" judge is set to be a father.

In an interview that ran yesterday in the UK Times, Cowell, 53, really seemed to be embracing his future duties as a dad, coupled with heart-felt sentiments about his impending baby.

"I went to see a scan today and it is just surreal," he told the Times. "You literally see this thing which is now alive moving around. I feel very paternal right now."

The former "American Idol" judge added that he is "very happy" with what's to come.

Cowell also spoke with Neil Fox of Magic FM about the next chapter in his life, and gushed about the mother of his child.

"It was a surprise initially and some of the circumstances around this were very uncomfortable to say the least, but it happened and she's an incredible girl," he said. "Then once I got used to the idea that I was going to be a dad, then I was really happy."

It's not all roses for Cowell, as he admits he's not good with babies.

"But I'm good with kids," he explained. "Once they can talk to you and I can talk to them, I think it's going to be fantastic… But overall I'm probably happier now than I have been for a long time."
