Doctor Holds Pre-Double Mastectomy Dance Party
While most people go into surgery with fear and nerves followed by a heavy dose of anesthesia, one California doctor went into her double mastectomy dancing to Beyonce.
Deborah Cohan, an Ob/Gyn, coordinated a "Get Me Bodied Flash Mob" so that before she went under the knife Tuesday, she and her doctors and nurses and friends and family around the world would be boogying down.
The result is a six-minute YouTube video, with more than 3 million views already, that shows Cohan in her "little hospital gown and bouffant cap," as she calls them, dancing to Beyonce's hit single, "Get Me Bodied."
Cohan, who could not be reached by ABCNews.com as she is recovering from surgery and on medical leave until January, posted a dance to action on her CaringBridge page a few days before her scheduled mastectomy at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco.
"My fantasy is for you to play the song [ found here] and dance wherever you happen to be (in the kitchen, the carwash, subway platform [Dan!], classroom, Labor and Delivery unit, wherever!) - ideally at 7:30 a.m. but really anytime Tuesday," she wrote. "Nothing brings me greater joy than catalyzing others to dance, move, be in their bodies. Are you with me people?"
Turns out Beyonce herself was on board. The singer posted the video on her Facebook page Thursday, commenting: "Deborah, you are awesome!"
Cohan also asked her friends and family to email her a photo or video of themselves dancing, writing that she envisioned creating a "healing video montage."
"I saw your video when a friend shared it on FB. You are nothing short of incredibly inspiring," wrote one anonymous supporter on CaringBridge. "Seems to me you have already won this battle. Love you and your courage! ROCK ON girl!"
Mt. Zion Hospital officials could not be reached for comment.
