You may not recognize Nicki Minaj lately.

The rapper and controversial "American Idol" judge has been trying out a more pared-down look. In fact, Minaj posted a bunch of makeup-free - and topless - photos on her Instagram Wednesday.

Even in the shower with dripping wet hair, the 31-year-old rapper looked beautiful.

She later explained on Twitter the reason for the photos. After wearing her natural curl for four years - often hidden under platinum wigs - Minaj decided to chemically relax or straighten her hair.

"It takes too much time to do it. Too much blow drying," she said by way of explanation.

"Plus I got new hair products Coming out so I gotta show u guys how well they work. Lmfao," she added.

Her locks aside, Minaj has been going for a more natural look recently.

"I just wanted to tone down, and I met the man who changed my life - [hairstylist] Oscar James," she told Glamour in October. "He was recommended to me by the beautiful Tyra Banks. He really understands hair. Hair doesn't have to be overprocessed and fried, even when you apply color. I've never been happier."

As for her more understated face, Minaj told the magazine, "With makeup, I started using more natural tones. I never thought I'd love nude lipstick, but I really do. I just feel sexier. Less is definitely more."
