After seeing both their parents' marriages break down, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden vowed when they became parents themselves to work through whatever difficulties they faced as a team in order to give their own children a "healthy family life."

"'We met and we were partners from day one," the reality star and daughter of singer Lionel Richie told Oprah Winfrey Tuesday.

Richie officially tied the knot with her rocker husband, singer for the band Good Charlotte, four years after they met in 2010.

"From the second we found out we were going to be parents together," Richie told Winfrey on OWN's "Where Are They Now," "we looked at each other and we said: 'OK, both of our parents are divorced. We both have had ups and downs with our parents, and we don't really have a strong example of what a healthy family life is. But we're recognizing that now, so let's work at it and let's go through this together as a team.'

"It's been great," she added. "And I would say that's the easiest and hardest part."
