"Twin Peaks" fans rejoice!

Director David Lynch's celebrated series, which garnered a loyal cult following, is returning to television as a new limited series for Showtime in 2016.

Lynch announced the news earlier today to his 1.8 million Twitter followers. "Dear Twitter Friends… it is happening again," he wrote, posting a teaser for the revival.

The cult favorite will pick up 25 years later from where it left off in 1991, when the offbeat ABC drama was canceled after two seasons. The new limited series will provide "long-awaited answers for the series' passionate fan base," Showtime said in a statement.

Lynch and Mark Frost, creators of the original series, will write and produce all nine episodes of the limited series. Lynch is on board to direct every episode, with production starting in 2015.

Leading up to the series revival, Showtime will re-air the first two seasons.

Widely considered groundbreaking at the time and a precursor to today's edgy cable series, "Twin Peaks" followed the residents of a quaint northwestern town who were stunned after their homecoming queen, Laura Palmer, is murdered. When FBI agent Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLachlan, came to town to investigate the case, the town's secrets were gradually exposed.

No word yet on casting for the new limited run, but Lynch and Frost seem eager to give fans more of what they've been pining for.

In a statement from Showtime, they said, "The mysterious and special world of Twin Peaks is pulling us back. We're very excited. May the forest be with you."
