Dave Chappelle Reveals Why He's Really Back
If there are still doubts about whether Dave Chappelle is really back, he dispels them in a new interview with GQ.
The 41-year-old comedian, who took a break from show business in 2005 at the height of his eponymous television series, opened up about where he went and why he's back for good.
"You know, for a while, I was kind of sequestered," Chappelle, who was named one of GQ's Men of the Year, told the magazine's December issue. "Well, sequestered is not the right word. It was more like Superman's self-imposed exile."
Chappelle, who took a trip to South Africa after abruptly leaving his show, said he never planned to leave the business for good.

"People are always like, 'I heard you moved to Africa.' And in reality I was only there for about two weeks," he said. "I was on 'vacation.' I don't want to be too specific, but it wasn't even like I necessarily left. I wasn't like, 'I'm leaving and I'm never coming back.' It wasn't necessarily that kind of thing. But then there was a sequence of events…and ten years later, here we are."
Having recently spent nine out of the past 12 months on the road doing standup, including 10 sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, Chappelle said he's in a good place in his life.
"You know, I have angst in my life, but I'm like anybody," he told GQ. "Some days I am not happy, but I'm not necessarily sad. What I'm trying to say is that if anything like Robin Williams ever happened to me, suspect foul play."
