Getting Ready for a Crash Landing on ‘GMA Weekend’

Crash landing. But where? ABC News’ Neal Karlinsky was tracking the NASA satellite overnight from inside the command center in California for “GMA.” While we waited for word about when and where UARS had hit, @nealkarlinsky tweeted “Goodnight moon. Goodnight cow jumping over the moon. Goodnight plummeting satellite & 26 pieces threatening doom. #childrensdisastertale.”

NASA tweeted just after midnight that “It’s possible that #UARS is down by now. (Everybody OK out there?) We’re waiting for confirmation from US Strategic Command.” Then just after 3 am, NASA tweeted again, saying “We can now confirm that #UARS is down!” The other satellite-related twitter account a few of us were following, @Uars_incoming, was also tweeting the re-entry: “Heads up Canada!! #satellite parking!” and making quips about locking the “Atmospheric Re-entry” badge on foursquare.

By the time “GMA” was on the air, we had great video of UARS streaking over southern California on one of its final orbits which we included in our cold open. If you’re looking at that footage of the satellite flaming across the sky, it’s going five miles a second! And though it’s officially down, NASA is still searching for it, unclear whether it dropped into Canada or the Pacific Ocean.

Of course, the satellite wasn’t the only topic we covered today. We talked to “20/20? co-anchor Elizabeth Vargas about the latest on Amanda Knox and welcomed the daredevil kayakerto our studios to talk to us live about his 100-foot plunge over an Oregon falls.

Our production associates scrambled all morning to hook up phone lines and test them out in the “GMA” conference room for a special segment. Since Bianna, Dan and Ron usually ask the questions, we wanted to give our viewers a turn. You can’t vote them off the show, but you can ask Ron what he eats every day before the broadcast (hint: it’s cold and creamy). Call 1-855-GMA-WKND from 9am-12pm EST today.

Finally, our music debate of the day: What was the best soundtrack for the kayaking footage? It was Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” versus Coldplay’s “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.” Tom Petty won… for most of the teases.
