Josh, Sam Have Fun With Doritos on 'GMA'

Plummeting prices at the pump led our show this morning. After months of gas prices gouging everyone’s wallets, we moved the drop in prices to the top of the rundown in our newscast. Turns out that while stocks have tanked, so have our gas prices, falling below $3 a gallon in some areas of the country for the first time in months. The nationwide average is still about $3.49 per gallon, according to AAA/Lundberg Survey. That’s down $0.12 in just the last two weeks. All that coming as a lot of volatility is expected on Wall Street. Investors are hoping European leaders will bail out Greece one more time –  possibly writing off up to half the country’s debt.

A fun moment right after 8 a.m. Josh Elliott kicked off his newscast with a proper sendoff for the man who invented Doritos. Arch West created the popular snack back in the 1960s and now they’re sold on every continent except Antarctica. West was 97. His family plans to toss chips into his grave at the burial.  In West’s honor, our props team brought in a slew of Doritos for the anchors. Sam Champion wanted “Cool Ranch” except he was out in L.A., beaming in through the weather smart screen. Josh tried to oblige his request. Turns out Sam can’t be fed virtually.

Plus, royal confessions this morning! ABC’s Nick Watt delved into the very private side of a modern monarch after candid comments from Prince William about his relationship with his grandmother the Queen. She’s celebrating 60 years on the throne this year — and she never gives interviews — so we couldn’t wait to get to the revelations from her grandson Prince William, ranging from how she told him what to wear to his own wedding and why she told him to rip up the guest list.   Click here for the whole story and Nick Watt’s favorite tidbit from the book.

The most important news of the morning — at least for “ Dancing With the Stars” fans — was reported by GMA special contributor Melissa Rycroft.  Rookie dancers Val Chmerkovskiy and Tristan MacManus are…  single… but they’re not happy about it. “No one’s happy being single,” MacManus told Rycroft. ( Click here for the full report). The two and their dancing partners face off tonight on the dance floor in the second competition of the season.
