Nov. 21: Geneva Summit Ends; Deadly Fire at Vegas’ MGM Grand

On this day in 1985, the Geneva Summit ended in Switzerland. President Reagan and the Soviet Union’s Mikhail Gorbachev discussed the arms race and decreasing the threat of a nuclear war.

It was the first time the world’s superpowers had met in six years. The talks resulted in the Geneva Accord, which committed the U.S. and Soviet Union to a new focus on human rights among other things.

Nov. 21, 1980: Deadly Fire at MGM Grand Hotel

In 1980, a fire at the 26-story MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas killed 85 people. It is considered one of the worst hotel blazes in United States history and left 700 people injured. Nevada enacted statewide regulations protecting high-rise hotels with sprinkler systems and alarms after the fire.
