Nov. 23: First Issue of Life Magazine Published

On this day in 1936, the first issue of Life as a weekly news magazine was published. The cover featured a photo of the Fort Peck Dam by Margaret Bourke-White.  The original Life folded during the  Great Depression but was relaunched by Henry Luce as a picture-based periodical in 1936.

And on this day in 1990, Roald Dahl, the author of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach” and several other books, died.

1985: EgyptAir Is Hijacked

On this day in 1985, three hijackers calling themselves “The Egypt Revolution” took over an Egyptian jetliner en route from Athens to Cairo.

2003: Georgian President Resigns

Escalating protests force the resignation of Georgia’s President Shevardnadze.
