Wojciech Jaruzelski declared a state of emergency in Poland. Military and police sealed off the borders to Poland and cut communications and prevent the fall of communism. The communication blackout prevented non-communist trade union Solidarity from organizing a swift response.

2000 George W. Bush's Acceptance Speech

 

President-elect George W. Bush addressed supporters in Texas a day after the U.S. Supreme Court halted a Florida vote recount.  The Texas governor became the 43rd president-elect. In his acceptance speech, Bush proclaims America "must rise above a house divided" and expresses optimism that Republicans and Democrats share the same hopes for America.  President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney took the oath of office Jan. 20, 2001.

2000 Al Gore's Concession Speech

 

Vice President Gore officially conceded presidency to George W. Bush. Gore won the national popular vote, but lost the election when Florida's vote recount was halted and Florida's Electoral College votes went to Bush.
