Forever 21′s ‘Allergic to Algebra’ Shirt Draws Criticism

ht allergic to algebra dm 110912 wblog Forever 21s Allergic to Algebra Shirt Draws Criticism

(Forever 21)

A Forever 21 shirt with the words “Allergic to Algebra” printed on the front is the latest shirt to draw criticism for its seemingly anti-education message for girls and teenagers.

One shopper posted a photo on Reddit.com, a social news website, of the shirt on a mannequin with a neon green note attached to it with the message: “SMART girls are cool. Don’t buy this top.”

Many comments on Reddit.com expressed disdain for the shirt.

“It’s a big deal because there is still this childish perception — among females AND males – that girls can’t do math,” wrote a commenter by the handle mikgyver. “I can’t tell you how many times, as a girl who’s good at math, that I’ve been accused of ‘trying to be a guy’ when I get good grades in math.”

Another commenter, called “kadhai” and self-identified as a “student of mathematics,” wrote, “I’m curious as to what the story behind this top is, and who thought it would be a good idea to put something so offensive as this on a shirt.”

“Our merchandise is intended to appeal to all audiences, not to offend them,” Linda Chang, a senior marketing manager for Forever 21, told ABCNews.com in a statement. “We would like to apologize to our customers as our intent was not to discredit education and we are taking the proper actions necessary.”

The company told ABCNews.com that it is pulling the shirt from its website.

The trendy, Los Angeles-based retailer is popular among teenagers and the shirt is being sold for $12.80. There were no shirts that alluded to education in the men’s section of the website.

And the algebra shirt isn’t the only one on the website that seems to be down on school.

One shirt blatantly declares “Skool sucks” and another shirt has a list on the front that reads: “A+=amazing, B=brilliant, C=cool, D=delightful, F=fabulous.” The website’s tagline for selling the shirt is “F doesn’t always mean fail!”

One shirt seemed promising with the message, ”I heart school” emblazoned on the front, but a photo of the back reveals the rest of the message: “not…”

The “Allergic to Algebra” Forever 21 shirt follows a controversial and similarly themed shirt from JCPenney.

Less than two weeks ago, JCPenney pulled a shirt from its website that drew sharp criticism from consumers calling it “sexist.” The girls’ shirt read: “I’m too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me.”

After a Change.org petition was created to remove the shirt, the company obliged and apologized to its customers. “We want to apologize to our customers,” Ann Marie Bishop, a spokeswoman for JCPenney, told ABCNews.com. “We agreed that the shirt does not deliver an appropriate message.”

Seriously? It’s a T-SHIRT! I’m a woman and I’ll be the first to admit that I hated algebra (and all other math) when I was in school. Not because I’m a girl, just because I didn’t like it. Why does everything have to be made into a case of sexism? If you people are so worried about what girls are wearing, how about talking about the short shorts, middle baring, overtly sexual things girls wear? I’d be more concerned about that then whether they like math or not.

Oh My God…..where in the world does this insanity end? Everyone, everywhere is offended by something or another in their lives. Time to start growing some thicker skin and get over ourselves already. Im so sick of it already!

Yesterday was a national day of remembrance for a national tragedy that drew us as Americans together. Today we’re arguing about a t-shirt. *Shakes head*

All these people worked up over a t-shirt. LOL. Get a life. Seriously.

I second that, people in this country really need to get a life.

They gotta have their 15 seconds of whatever. The people that complain about t-shirts are more stupid than the shirts. They just can’t realize how they are showing it when they make their remarks.

With everything going on today with the economy, joblesness, etc they see THIS as troublesome?? GET A LIFE INDEED!!!!

Yet again more evidence of the anti -education mentality in this country. There WAS a time when bragging that you were stupid was something to be ashamed of. Folks used to value being smart. Not surpisingly that coincided with our most profitable highest standard of living. In the 1960s we had a higher percentage of our population as college grads than any other country on the earth AND it’s no coincidence that co-insides with our richest we’ve ever been, the years we landed a man on the moon and built the tallest buildings in the world. Now we’re 17th and sinking. Instead of visions of greatness and kids foaming at the mouth to get into college, they were “I’m stupid” t shirts with pride. It’s a symptom of a greater problem that results in the biggest problem of all —-unemployment and low wage jobs. the unemployment rate for college grads is 4%. oh yeah. Having a society that thinks bragging about being stupid is no big deal, dont look now, being uneducated IS our BIGGEST problem right now.

Oh, good lord! I’m sure glad people, and stupid mothers in general, weren’t insane when I was a kid. This is just assarchy. Get over yourselves you 20- and early 30-something group of IDIOTS who have nothing better to do than whine over stupid nonsense that means absolutely nothing.

Posted by: kim | September 12, 2011, 2:18 pm 2:18 pm

geesh! why are we worried about a t shirt when there are t v shows like jersey shore, i didn’t know i was pregnant , toddlers and tiaras…should i continue? these shows are more detrimental to us as a society than a t shirt! besides i think the irony is that as some one that is great at math and algebra …. i would wear the shirt because i think its funny. since when does the writing on a t shirt have any real value any way ?

What about all the boy shirts that say stuff about playing video games before they do their homework? The sayings are meant as a joke but obviously people have lost their sense of humor. I can think of a few things we should be more worried about than what a shirt has written on it.

Posted by: Shannon | September 12, 2011, 5:48 pm 5:48 pm

Actually, I find most disturbing the number of people here who can’t seem to wrap their heads around the fact that messages like this are insidious and plant subtle ideas in the impressionable minds of children and teenagers that, left unchallenged, eventually become unexamined and unquestioned ideas held by adults. I take it that many of you are unaware of the research that shows no difference by gender in young children’s attitudes toward math and science in school. They are all generally excited to learn new things at that age, and all children are natural scientists, curious about the world. By the time they reach middle school and beyond, however, girls are discouraged from excelling at math and science both by attitudes from teachers and other adults (also something that has been studied and observed) and by peer pressure fueled by cultural messages *like this one on this shirt*!

It’s already been mentioned here that under-education is one of the biggest problems we face today in America. Other nations are excelling at the subjects that generate advances in technology and innovation, quite often in fields that America pioneered! We are faltering and falling behind. That’s a problem that can’t be solved in the halls of Congress. It has to be tackled in the classroom, each and every day, starting with little girls whose mothers adorn them with cutesy shirts that reinforce anti-education, anti-smart-girl messages and attitudes that insist that it’s MUCH better for a girl to be pretty than to be intelligent. To all of you wailing about how this is too trivial to bother with compared to the ‘big picture’ issues of our day, you’ve completely missed the boat. ‘Big picture’ issues are made up of and perpetuated by many important comparatively ‘small’ issues. THIS is one of them.

Just take a breath people. What if the shirt said “Allergic to P.E.”? Would that be making a statement about the obesity epidemic? No. Some kids take a lot of pride in being great at math, others music and some sports. Many of those complaining need an “allergic to logic” shirt because these sweeping conclusions do not add up. Some girls are great at math but have a sense of humor. It is silly, and I think that Is the only thing we need learn from this.

Posted by: Audrey | September 12, 2011, 8:00 pm 8:00 pm

Why does a shirt like this cause “outrage” and why is it “sexist” when there is no outrage against against items printed with the statement “Boys are stupid. Throw rocks at them” and no one says this is sexist?

Posted by: Jim | September 12, 2011, 8:58 pm 8:58 pm

I’m a woman currently working towards a math PhD (in a subfield of algebra, no less!), and I don’t see what the big deal is. In fact, had Forever 21 not pulled the T-shirt from their website, I would have gone to buy one for myself, and my colleagues (both male and female) and I would have had a good laugh over it! I think people should stop taking everything so seriously. Wearing a shirt that says “I’m cool” doesn’t make that person cool (in fact, if they’re wearing something like that, they’re probably not cool), and similarly, wearing a shirt that says “allergic to algebra” doesn’t mean they’re bad at math, etc. Reading between the lines too much? I think so!

Posted by: Stella | September 12, 2011, 10:22 pm 10:22 pm

There should be a guy standing next to her wearing
a “I’m With Stupid” t-shirt.

Posted by: Lamont | September 13, 2011, 5:21 am 5:21 am

My 11 year old daughter is a member of the national junior honor society. She sees nothing wrong with the shirt and understood immediately that the shirt meant “She’d rather not do algebra.” Not that “she’s stupid and can’t do algebra.” “Allergic to homework” shirts are available for both genders. Maybe some of these offended parents should go back to school for some reading comprehension practice!

Why do people like wasting their energy on things that don’t matter? Why get upset at things like T-shirts, and simultaneously ignore truly offensive things that do matter? It’s a T-shirt. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. If you see someone wearing it, BINGO, you know they’re an idiot. And isn’t it nice to know?

So no one things that generations of “math is hard and I hate it” speak being passed down is to blame for terrible math scores in the US compared to other countries?

Posted by: awesomerobot | September 13, 2011, 9:39 am 9:39 am

Seriously… I don’t understand what the big deal is over a stupid t-shirt! I think it’s funny how everybody makes a big deal about a shirt that says “Allergic to Algebra” but I’m quite sure somebody could walk around with a naked woman on their shirt OR a shirt that says “sex symbol” on it (referring to themselves as the sex symbol) and nobody would make a big deal out of it!! The clothing company isn’t trying to say that girls are stupid they’re just trying to make shirts that people will wear.. and this shirt has a humorous side to it and that will bring in buyers… I’d probably wear a shirt like that just for the heck of it and I was an honors student when I was in school! It doesn’t mean I’m stupid or that any other girl is stupid it’s just a fun harmless t-shirt. It’s obvious that the shirt meant that a person would rather not do math.. but honestly who really wants to do math unless that’s just something your into.. think about it.. you’re making a big deal over nothing.

Wow, we are all so intellectual, aren’t we? I’ve signed a lot of things by Change.org, but this was one petition I refused to sign. This just crossed the line. I really have to agree with Lamont, who said his/her daughter was a member of National Honor Society (I was, too!) and simply interpreted the shirt as saying that one would prefer to not do algebra. I HATED algebra. I wouldn’t buy the shirt, but to go so far as to call it sexist and pull it off shelves? Please. These t-shirts have been around since I was in elementary school, and honestly, as I got older, I just rolled my eyes rather than had a hissy fit. There a bigger things to get upset about – such as the fact that women in my history class are still saying that “women should be sensitive and men should be strong”. Get angry about that, not a dumb t-shirt.

Posted by: Julia | September 13, 2011, 1:32 pm 1:32 pm

What a ridiculous story. Is it so difficult to realize the possibility that either male or female students could dislike math but still be good at it. Get a grip on reality. It’s just a t-shirt.

Posted by: Troy | September 13, 2011, 5:13 pm 5:13 pm

The really funy thing is that while you debate the issue, the shirt is on sale on ebay for 16.99 + 2.99 shipping. There are male and female sizes and colors. The results of your efforts is that the price is now inflated and the item more available than before the numerous ranting.
It is just a funny t-shirt! Find a cause truely worthy of debating…

I totally agree with Stella and Tara. I love math. I absolutely hate working through piles and piles of pointless algebra. I have a degree in physics and am currently doing grad school in economics. Every time I have to do algebra, I use a computer instead of working it out by hand. Algebra is pointless, time consuming, and completely deviates one’s attention from actually learning math. If I had a kid, I’d be happy if he/she wore this shirt.

I received the petitions for these (Forever 21 and JC Penney’s) t-shirt faux pas and am actually refusing to sign them. In fact, I really wanted to buy this shirt (I really do suck at math) and even have a shirt that says “I SUCK AT MATH” (to fight Asian stereotypes, which I am). I’m now offended that Forever 21 has removed it from their site. I’m going to go paint my son’s toenails now and cause yet another ruckus.

I agree with most of the posts here that says guys are allowed to wear stupid sloan shirts insulting themselves, why can’t girls? I’ve actually bought a guy’s shirt to wear for working out that says “I got an A in Anatomy”, which OBVIOUSLY has a sexist undertone both in guys being more ‘intelligent’ and ‘sexually successful’ – in the end, it’s still a funny shirt. There are plenty of other sexist things to raise a stink about, but this is NOT one of them.

T-shirt makers are just giving us the consumers what they think we want. They are a mirror on our culture. I wouldn’t take as much offense if it wasn’t so true that the US as a country (not just the girls) are getting our butts handed to us by the rest of the world. So I agree the shirt is not that big of a deal, but the reflection in the mirror is what concerns me. We as a culture keep promoting athletes, singers/rappers and actors as heros and cultural icons when the only purpose they serve is to entertain the rest of us. But on the flip side we make fun of what really makes a difference in the world (or at least the future of the word) Math and Science…
It is going to be a rough road ahead as a country if we don’t wake up and realize that the world has changed and we are lost in the dust…

I’m a 15 year old girl and I love math, especially algebra. In fact, algebra is my favorite branch of math. I also love astrophysics and for university I want to go to MIT to be able to pursue a scientific career and because it seems to be the university I’d be most compatible with among the schools with great programs in the fields I enjoy. But then again, I am the exception, not the rule. I don’t shop at Forever 21 because I’m not keen on buying cheaply-made ugly clothing aimed at kids who don’t understand the value of a product and how to truly buy the best way economically. But I’m really not surprised, as Forever 21 has a poor track record with many things, such as ignorance of copyright and intelligent property, sweatshop labor and quality. But what really concerns me is this stigma placed on math, especially towards girls. This is yet another example of the prevalent anti-intellectualism that I find quite annoying, and if we want America to head back into the right direction we will have to change the dynamic in schools and the media because as a society, we need mathematically-inclined people. And I was recently reading in Scientific American Magazine that the percentage of schoolchildren interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) has decreased. From personal experience, math is more enjoyable with a good teacher who really understands the concepts. But it seems that the people who really enjoy math tend to branch into careers like being a professor or an engineer, which I can understand because they pay better and are viewed more highly in society, which is a problem. It’s somewhat complex, and the whole system would need to be changed, and I’m not sure how willing people are to pursue a change. But right now I think I’ll just have to remain a minority, a teen who actually enjoys math. But I think why this shirt is so troubling is because it reveals an outcome in one of the flaws in the system. What we need to do is make math interesting for young people, and our country will be more likely to succeed. But in a time and situation, how plausible is that plan? The context of the shirt is much more concerning than the short itself.

A) That shirt is CUTE! B) Algebra sucks I think I’m allergic to it :0)
