Woman Leaves $13M Fortune to Pet Cat

ABC
A 4-year-old stray cat that was rescued from the streets of Rome has inherited a $13 million fortune from its owner, the wealthy widow of an Italian property tycoon.
Maria Assunta left the fortune to her beloved kitty Tommaso when she died two weeks ago at the age of 94. The feline’s newfound riches include cash, as well as properties in Rome, Milan and land in Calabria.
As her health began to fail two years ago, Assunta, who had no children, began to seek out a way to see that Tommaso was properly cared for after she died. In November 2009, she bequeathed her entire estate to the alley cat that she’d rescued.
Initially, Assunta had instructed her attorneys to “identify an animal welfare association or group to which to leave the estate and the commitment of looking after Tommaso,” according to the Daily Telegraph.
Unable to find a satisfactory association to see to it that Tommaso was loved and cared for, Assunta decided to leave all her money to the cat via her nurse, Stefania, who cared for her until her dying day. Her last name has not been disclosed.
“She had become very fond towards the nurse who assisted her,” Anna Orecchioni, one of the lawyers, told Il Messaggero newspaper.
“We’re convinced that Stefania is the right person to carry out the old lady’s wishes. She loves animals just like the woman she devoted herself to right up until the end.”
Stefania told the Telegraph that she had no idea the woman that she was caring for was so incredibly wealthy.
“The old lady suffered from loneliness,” the nurse said. “She looked after that cat more than you’d look after a son.
“I promised her that I would look after the cat when she was no longer around. She wanted to be sure that Tommaso would be loved and cuddled. But I never imagined that she had this sort of wealth,” she said. “She was very discreet and quite. I knew very little of her private life. She only told me that she had suffered from loneliness a lot.”
Tommaso and Stefania, along with another cat, are living outside Rome at an address that is undisclosed, so to avoid con artists and potential kidnappers.
“We have gotten lots of email messages from candidates who wanted to adopt the little Tommasino,” the cat’s lawyer told ABC News.
The windfall for Tommaso places him No.3 on the list of wealthy pets, behind Kalu the chimp, whose owner left him $80 million dollars, and top dog Gunther IV, a German shepherd who inherited $372 million dollars from his father, Gunther III, the beloved companion of an eccentric German countess.
Real estate magnate Leona Helmsley famously left $12 million to her little dog Trouble, although her human descendents contested, and Trouble’s pot was cut to $2 million.

Leaving that much money to your pet … in other words, just leave the money to whatever conartist can convince you they will actually take care of it to those standards … yeah right … That much money could have been left to many well known animal welfare agencies – with plenty left over for the pet, now whatever clever lawyer, accountant, conman, etc will probably get a hold of it after the already aging animal dies.

Ignorant waste of money that could do great things for poor or sick people. But hey, she was 94.

Most of us who own pets treat them as family. This woman loved her beloved cat as she would a son or daughter. She didn’t have anyone else to dote on. This is a sad story. Obviously this lady wasn’t concerned with her wealth, but the welfare of her cat. This lady was certainly not selfish, but a bit ignorant as to a better use for the money. It could have been used to help other abused animals or feed the hungry. I would guess she didn’t think about things in the right way, could have had dementia, but maybe unable to think clearly. I feel sad for this woman who has passed away. May she rest in peace.

I sorry, but people who do crazy things like this, are just that CRAZY. She choose to spend her last years with an animal, that if she was to have died in the house and not been found that same cat would’ve eaten her not give her CPR, her servents who toke care of her till she died wasn’t even good enough to get a large sum for their services or duties. No, this selfish old bittie put on paper she wanted it to go to a damn CAT. CRAZY

The article said that they have gotten lots of email messages from candidates who wanted to adopt the little Tommasino. I bet they did. Why don”t those “Candidates” go down to the animal rescue mission to save a cat, OH, Thats right. Those cats aren’t worth 13 million dollars!

To leave that much money with a pet is ridiculous in my opinion. The money could have been used for better things, if she didn’t have any family to give it to. Like helping the needy or even a donation to a charity. I love my dog…but would never leave him millions of dollars.

Walter B … Her deceased husband was a real estate magnate … selling beachfront in Venice maybe?

For those who think the woman is crazy to leave her fortune to her beloved cat are the ignorant. They did not realized that the woman leaves her fortune to her beloved cat because no other human being except her nurse gave a damn about her loneliness and her situation. Human being do not deserve to inherit her fortune. But I agree to some post here that she should’ve given or made the animal shelter as the trustee. My cats are the sole beneficiaries of my estate, they will be taking care of until the last cat died, the estate will be sold and the proceeds will be donated to my favorite animal shelter. “And we won’t ever be truly happy unless we finding ways to give ourselves away out of love to others” (Genesis). in her case to her beloved cat.

She should find grants used to help animals and donate some of the money to those grants. that way she could really know what the money is being used for
Posted by: TheDendrologist | December 12, 2011, 11:33 am 11:33 am
I am confused at as to how you can leave money to an animal. You would really have to leave the money to a person who will care for the cat. I mean, how is a cat to spend 13 million dollars? I am so confused!
Posted by: rachelhope26 | December 12, 2011, 11:38 am 11:38 am
To leave that much money to a pet shows a person with deeply flawed values and misplaced loyalty. There are so many people in need! There are various animal associations that could have benefited from some of it! SMH.

And in the other hand there is so poorest that they can’t even feed their children… But no only that… I’ve being working with the praise of my home town trying to collets donation to build a Sanctuary Project which would help a huge numbers communities to be prepare for their future because in this project we included a cathedral for the miracle Jesus of Bayaguana (Santo Cristo de los Milagros de Bayaguana), an elementary school, a technical school, a senior home, recreation sport area, a num residency, a medical clinic with lab, etc. up to today we still working colleting pennies for a project of $4.0 million dollars. Essentially, it seems, she left the money to woman who nursed her through her dying days. The cat is in her care, and the funds are essentially hers to do with as she likes, I imagine. This woman must have loved and trusted her nurse as well. She must have been a very good caretaker. It’s really nice when someone who cares for others receives such an unexpected recompense.

I totally agree that the money could have been donated to a charity and helped many many animals or people in need. However, loneliness is an awful thing. The poor lady probably felt alienated by friends and relatives and the caretaker and the cat eventually became her entire world. She did not have the foresight to think that once the cat died, there would be so much money left. I am praying that there is much more to this story than the media provides!

You are over looking the one blessed here. Not the cat but the nurse who took care or the woman who did not know she was wealthy. She will know what to do with the money. “Because you have done it to the least of these you have done it to Me.” God bless that nurse. Amen!

Most of the commenters on here are such hypocrites. Would you be tearing this old woman down so much if she’d have left the money to some distant relative that was a loser or a crook? No, because it’s HER money, and like it or not, she can do with it what she pleases. Many of you are calling this woman selfish, but how frequently do YOU give to those who are needy? SMH

there is billions of people that need money and she gives it to her cat, witch more than likely will receiving AMAZING care for about 1k a year the rest going to who ever is the owner.

Anything that makes you happiness not only making you happy but making you to recognized your present in this world have the right to own you, and if someones owns you automatically it has lay claim over everything you have in Control. Because even that so call lawyer will be receiving salary from the Cat and also people employed by the Woman will be pay by the Cat. Just understand the reason.

OMG – give it a rest people. If you read the article, she left the cat to the care of the nurse. So, she made her nurse rich and made sure her cat was taken care of. Obviously, she had no one else she felt that close to so if the cat and the nurse made her feel loved, then so be it. It wouldn’t even be an article if she had just left it directly to the nurse – just an interesting twist…

I have to agree with Mr. Timme62,” My thoughts, exactly. Animals are more worthy than most humans” Most humans are selfish, greedy and etc. I see that around all the time, even by people who seems really nice on the surface. Animals are pure soul and they deserve all the best.

Non-human animals often provide much more love than humans towards each other do. Why shouldn’t they recieve guaranteed love and care for the rest of their lives? Every type of animal in the world matters. It is a shame she could not find a deserving animal organization, that is sad that they are not as safe as would be required. I hope that changes every where in the world.

I am glad real estate is still worth something over there or this poor cat would have had to eat tuna fish like the rest of us instead of caviar. I love my dog, but ignorance doesn’t consume me like that poor old hag. Let’s just be thankful that she didn’t have any kids thus the idiocy stops with the cat. Oh well, we “eat” at mcdonalds and shop at walmart thus handing money over to corporate bottom feeders all day long why not let this woman leave her fortune to her attorneys and “the nurse that cared for her.” Oh, I mean her cat…I am just saying maybe there is a nurse or maybe there never was and now there is. I think this is so awesome that she did this.. All the people who are saying she could have helped other ppl with the money, who cares! It was her money and if she wants to leave it to her cat then it is her choice. She obviously loved her pet more than anyone else due to the fact that nobody ever visited her so who cares that children are starving in africa if she loves her cat.
My pets are the only thing that I am concerned with when I die, I will make sure that they are taken care of!

Read the article again people. The article stated that the woman did not find any animal welfare organization or group in which she felt satified that would care for her cat. They also stated that she is leaving the cat her money via her nurse. In other words, the nurse is in charge of how the money will be spent in caring for the cat. So for all those people who made assumptive statements thinking that she didn’t try to find an animal welfare group/organization before making her will or thought she actually left the cat in charge of the inheritance, re-read the article again. Or better yet, read the article first before you jump the gun the next time. As for those who feel she wasted her money, think about where were her caring human friends and family when she was feeling alone? Too many people view an inheritance as a right. It is not a right. It is a gift. Just because you are related to the decease does not automatically mean you are entitled to their money after they died. This is especially the case when you have not been in contact or have been in contact sporadically with the person.

This is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. That money should have gone to the sick or poor, not the cat. The cat should have been arranged to be taken care of by new owners with a small sum of the cash, and the rest to charity. But no, the money will end up with someone who is already filthy rich, and doesn’t need it.

All these folk critisising others but take a look at yourselves and ask yourself when you last looked out for someone lonely or gave something/your time for charity or checked on an elderly neighbour. It’s only money (easy to say I know) but you can’t think of it in terms of “that 13 million could have been spent better…”. There’s lots of things that people (individually or en mass) spend 13 million on that are far worse.

Inspiring? Are you nuts? There are little children who are in need, in our country!! That really is sickning to me. To all of those out there who leave money to animals, who say noone else out there loved them? They may be right…. it takes a real dumb – - -. I’m sure all those traits were there before they died!. I’m just sayin!

I agree with all the people who think this story is completely ridiculous. And I do volunteer at nonprofits.

There is also one more technique to increase traffic for your blog that is link exchange, so you also try it Link exchange is nothing else but it is only placing the other person’s blog link on your page at proper place and other person will also do same for you.

I think it is teriffic. I have a place in my soull where all the homeles and abused animals reside.
I love them more than people. I wish i were a judge I would create such tough laws. You abuse an animal and kill it. YOU DIE!!!! DEATH PENALTY.
