Papa John’s Employee Calls Woman ‘Lady Chinky Eyes’ on Receipt

Papa John’s has apologized after an employee typed a racial slur on a receipt to a customer Friday at one of its locations in New York City.
Minhee Cho posted an image of the receipt on Twitter, which called her “lady chinky eyes.”
“Hey @PapaJohns just FYI my name isn’t ‘lady chinky eyes,’” Cho tweeted.
The image went viral, and many tweeted complaints to Papa John’s, such as “Your employees are your brand.”
Papa John’s replied to many complaints via Twitter, noting that the employee was being fired.
“We are very upset by recent receipt issue in New York & sincerely apologize to our customer. Franchise employee involved is being terminated,” Papa John’s tweeted.
This isn’t the first time a restaurant has come under fire over employees using racial or ethnic slurs on receipts.
Last month, a cashier at a Chick-fil-A restaurant in Irvine, Calif., was fired after allegedly mocking Asian-American customers, ABC News Los Angeles station KABC-TV reported.
The cashier reportedly used “Ching” and “Chong” in the customer identification line on the receipts.
Photos of those receipts have also gone viral online.
In a written statement, a representative for the fast-food chain told KABC that “the individual clearly violated our operating standards.”
“The matter was addressed and discussed immediately with the guests on the spot; and a confirmation was provided that the employee was immediately dismissed for the individual behavior,” the statement said.

Can’t image the employee types fast food restaurants employ. The look for the bottom of hte barrel and they get it.
It is not appropriate to insult, deride or otherwise a customer, no matter their ehtnic identity, clothes they were, etc.
It is the responsibility of the employee to treat customers is a respectful way, unless the customer is not treating the employee is a respectful manner; then the gloves come off.

Get over it!!!! I would never have been offended. Now rehire that employee back. Just tell him or her to be more careful and ask for a name or assign a number. This was NOT a firable offense. If there is blame, it should go all the way up then. People are WAY too sensitive and those “way too sensitive” people ARE THE PROBLEM. For Pete’s sake. If this person stays fired tell him or her to respond to this email and I’ll give him or her a job with a $1 per hour raise of what he or she was earning before because now I have a “trained” employee who won’t make that mistake again.

Right, who cares? It’s not like the employee used a Hispanic or Black slur.
Posted by: Calvin Hobbes | January 8, 2012, 6:20 pm 6:20 pm
A racial slur is a racial slur, even if it wasnt directed against hispanics or blacks. How can you call a customer a racial slur and NOT get fired? Ive heard of people getting fired for far less offensive actions.

I won’t order from Papa John’s again because the last time they said it’d be a 40 minute wait. It was 2 hours before I got my pizza and when I called them, they got totally shirty with me over it. 2 hours for a pizza is way to long.

The employer made the right decision and that employee is no longer employed there. What that employee did is no better than the bullying going on in the schools. To some it may not sound like a big deal, but to the woman called that I can understand how it would be.. Are we all supposed to look the same to be accepted? This world is made up of all kinds of nationalities with characteristics symbolic of each. Perhaps this employee would look quite odd if they were to go to a ethnically pure country, due to the hodgepodge mixture that makes up most Americans.

I’ll never, EVER buy anything from Papa John’s again. They obviously haven’t sent a clear enough message to their employees that discrimination — of ANY type — will not be tolerated. That means there exists a top-down environment that condones this behavior…or it would not have happened in the first place. Papa John’s has lost my business FOREVER.

Look, all you people telling PapaJohn’s to get over it or to re-hire the employee…if that same person would have used the N-word to describe the customer or called a Mexican something else, that person would be fired on the spot. The employee deserved to be fired.

Sadly I’m afraid you are correct. The really pathetic part is, they don’t even realize how or why it’s offensive. As someone else said, it’s a guarantee that the negative responders here are all white, and I’d bet, all guys.

“Was it at least an accurate description? Did the lady have “chinky eyes?” ~~~~~~~~~ The line on the receipt wasn’t for a physical description, ‘accurate’ or not. It was the place for the lady’s NAME.

I’m actually glad they fired the employee because he knowingly did something he knew was wrong racial slurs of any race are wrong and should be weeded out it’s like the N word I don’t think anyone should say it no matter what race they are because as long as someone keeps using it, it will only remain within the language, so if you were not wanting that racial slur used in the future then everyone should stop saying it. Now as for papa johns I’ll still eat there because you can’t judge the company on a bad employee if everyone did that all fast food resteraunts would be out of business and america would be a lot healthier for it. Just so you know I’m mixed blood of just about everything but mostly native american so I can gurantee you I have no bias in this argument
Posted by: Tracy | January 9, 2012, 10:30 am 10:30 am
I do not think it was meant as a racial remark, maybe he did not know her name and he put that to remind him what order went with what person. Not saying that it was right, because if I went into a place and they handed me a recent that said “fat lady, or big lip guy” O would be offended to. In this world today there is always going to be racism no matter where you go. Rather you are African American, Asian, Hispanic, etc… someone is always going to look at you like you do not belong. I am Caucasian, and married to an African American, people look at us as though we are doing something wrong, he walks to work and people see him coming and lock their car doors, I have seen this and yes it bothers me, but to me this is just them being ignorant. People that judge others on their culture or the color of their skin need to grow up. Everyone in the world is the same, just because the color of their skin is different or their facial features are different does not mean they don’t bleed the same color blood as other people. I may be white but would I be considered an American just just because the color of my skin? I have Cherokee Indian, and German in my blood, does this mean I am not considered an American? People really need to grow up, yes this man might have put those words on the receipt, but I do not think it was meant as a racial remark. Although some people do say things to be racial.

I cun’t believe this is a big deal. Yea, I’m white and male, but for God’s sake, let it go.
Actually think it’s kind of funny. Even if the wrote on my check stub: “Wicked Pale Dude”… as long as I got my pizza
Posted by: MADDOG | January 9, 2012, 1:39 pm 1:39 pm
The “oh who cares it’s no big deal” attitude of some is indicative of the current generations lack of manners and discipline really, if I would have called someone a name like that growing up I would have suffered consequences for such disrespectful behavior, and no I’m not talking about physical abuse, my parents never laid a hand on me, but I would be made to apologize to the person, face to face, and then have my privileges revoked…you do that now with so many of the whiny spoiled “me me me” young people nowadays, they can actually call the cops on you for mental abuse. If someone can’t remember which customer is which unless they assign them offensive nicknames, you really want someone that obviously lacking of basic mental skills that they can’t even differentiate one person from another by sight making your food? Goodness knows what they would do to it.
Posted by: Tammi | January 9, 2012, 2:08 pm 2:08 pm
Oh so this kind of racism is funny…because it’s against Asian-Americans. But if it had been reversed, and it was a Korean cashier who wrote “nappy head” or “beaner face” y’all would be up in arms, because THAT kind of racism is offensive. GET REAL AMERICA. And for everyone saying it’s funny or it’s no big deal, it might be funny, but only in a casual setting. This is an employee on the job, dealing with a customer. It’s beyond unprofessional and if you really cannot understand that, good luck getting hired.

Last and only time I purchased from Papa John’s was in 2006. I placed an order online, went to pick it up 20 minutes later only to be told my order was received but had not been ‘worked on’. I waited there for another 40 minutes to get my pizza. Now I know maybe it was because I have a last name that looks totally Asian and I appear to be one.

papa john’s is 1 of the best pizza company’s in the world i will alway’s go back. and I do NOT CARE if one Employee Calls a Woman ‘Lady Chinky Eyes’ and i am Asian-American and i think it is funny. and i have one more thing to say U.S.A U.S.A. U.S.A #1.

Get over it?? Seriously? If an Asian wrote a white person’s name as ‘Yankee white trash’ I’m pretty sure people wouldn’t be saying ‘get over it’.

What about someone writing “red neck fat dude” or “green eyes hairy chick” on your receipt? Lmao.
Posted by: Black Eyes | January 10, 2012, 1:21 am 1:21 am
re ‘green eyes’ you say at least it wasnt a hispanic or black slur. as if there is no respect for asians and asian americans like myself. i understand many people use slurs and ethnicity no identify people, but for a large corporate nationwide company to place that type of identification onto a reciept that was given to a customer as a confirmation of purchase and business i find that very disrespectful! if you were to go to dinner and had an ethnic server and you spent a pretty penny and on your receipt it said cracker guy or yankee or red neck would you not feel the slightest offended based on your race but also the fact that basically you spent your hard earned money just to be insulted? how dare you say get over it when you must obviously have never been taught respect or just plain common courtesy. a thought train like that makes me think you throw around those types of slurs on a daily basis.

Honestly, I laughed. It’s nothing to get worked up over. Now if he had been rude to her, that’s something that needs to go.
Racism is, unfortunately, here to stay. There’s always going to be SOMEONE that doesn’t like someone because of their color. I really wish it wasn’t like that, but it is. Personally, I don’t use racial terms but sometimes I laugh when they’re used in a light-hearted way (as in not to be mean, just as a joke.) I get called cracker, honky and even redneck all the time but I just laugh it off. It’s their stupidity, not mine.

Not everyone in New York is so smart. But Minhee Cho was described as a lady. Just an immature person, now out of a job because the customer did not complain directly to the employee, an action far more caring for an ignorant person. So, because Minhee Cho did not just go to the order taker and say, “Do you realize that this could offend someone?” and leave it at that, I think Minhee, and I want to mention that I am married to an Asian woman, is now better known as “B**ch Chinky Eyes.” Do we understand my point? By the way, “I like to fire people!”

Racism of any kind should not be tolerated in the workplace. Not only does it offend customers, it also affects the work environment making it uncomfortable for those employed. Without customers there would be no purpose for the jobs, so if someone is behaving in a manner that is demeaning to the customer they should be terminated. It amazes me how disrespectful and racist some of the comments have been. It is shameful and disgusting. All of you know better but think it is the “cool” thing to do. With every banal slur you put out on this forum or to people in your every day life, you are just perpetuating the social disease that is racism by feeding it. Nothing good has ever come from it and nothing ever will. So please show some decorum and avoid spreading the disease.

I used to work at a Papa John’s and to be completely honest, while not offended, I am a little disgusted at the lack of common courtesy that the employee who put that on the receipt showed. It only takes 6 seconds to type ‘Walk-In” and 10 – 14 seconds to get the customer’s last name and type that in instead of “Walk-In”. Showing common courtesy and manners usually gets repeat business and positive word of mouth from customers to other people. Dumb things like the above only gives the store and the staff a bad name.
Posted by: Deborah Bryant | January 18, 2012, 2:31 am 2:31 am
If some random person I passed on the street called me “chinky eyes,” I’d kindly wave them the finger and move along. This would be no big deal. But if I’m a paying customer, and I’m treated this way by a business I am giving patronage to, you better believe I’d call them out on that bs. Fact is, there is a different dynamic when it comes to food service (anyone who’s ever worked as a server, or has common sense, knows this). When someone is a customer, you treat them with respect and gratitude. Without them, your business is nonexistent.
Good grief, the amount of idiocy here is far more appalling than the racism.

A reprimand would have been in order, but firing someone for one mistake is just silly. If this person wasn’t yet or “is” a racist, all you’re doing is making them remember that the asian made them lose their job heh, nice going there, keep the flames going. i also like how the lady goes and posts this all over the internet, making the entire business look bad and probably affecting the people who had nothing to do with this. Just as improper as it was for the employee to write this, it was just as bad for her to not simply take it up with the manager instead of airing it for all to see.
