A father is missing and 2-and-a-half-year old boy is dead after a canoeing trip over the weekend went wrong.

Sheldon Olsen, 31, and his son Jace took a canoe out on Lake Limerick at 5 p.m. in Mason County, Wash., on Saturday.

Witnesses saw the father and son on the lake around 6:15 p.m., but later saw the canoe empty and an alarm was sounded, according to the Mason County Sheriff's Office.

The boy's body was found close to 9:30 p.m. Saturday night and two life jackets were recovered from the canoe.

The body of Sheldon Olsen has not yet been found although divers searched for the father until midnight on Saturday and resumed their search Sunday.

Saturday was the birthday of the boy's mom Julie Olsen and Sheldon took his son out on the lake to give his wife time to rest, according to ABC affiliate KOMO.

Close to 7 p.m. on Saturday when her husband and son still hadn't returned, Julie Olsen called 911.

Authorities said the incident is being labeled as an accident.

Bishop Steve Taylor of the Church of Latter-day Saints told KOMO that the family was active in church and Jace was adopted.
