"ABC World News" Scores Smallest Weekly Viewing Gaps with "NBC Nightly News" in Six Weeks

ABC Newscast Slashes Demo Gap with "NBC Nightly News" by More than Half, Year-to-Year

For the week of August 27, 2012, "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" averaged 7.25 million Total Viewers and a 1.6 rating/6 share/1.89 million in Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research. Growing over the previous week (7.05 million and 1.79 million on w/o 8/20/12) for the 2nd week in a row in both Total Viewers (+3%) and Adults 25-54 (+6%), "ABC World News" posted its best numbers in 5 weeks - since w/o 7/23/12.

On Tuesday, the first night of the Republican National Convention, "ABC World News" ranked as the No. 1 evening newscast in Adults 25-54 (8/28/12), outdrawing "NBC Nightly News" by 87,000 viewers (2.035 million vs. 1.948 million - 8/28/12).

For the 4th straight week, "World News" decreased its week-to-week margins with "NBC Nightly News" in both Total Viewers (-8% - 695,000 vs. 757,000) and Adults 25-54 (-45% - 170,000 vs. 307,000). In fact, "World News" turned in its smallest margins with the NBC newscast in 6 weeks - since w/o 7/16/12.

"World News" slashed its year-to-year Adults 25-54 gap with "NBC Nightly News" by more than half (-61% - 170,000 vs. 432,000).

Season-to-date, "World News" is narrowing its gap with "NBC Nightly News" in Adults 25-54 (-17%), delivering its smallest news demo margin (387,000) with the NBC program in 3 years - since the 2008-09 season.

"World News" outperformed the "CBS Evening News" by 1.21 million Total Viewers and 148,000 Adults 25-54.

With the Republican Party gathered to formally nominate Mitt Romney as its party's candidate in the race for the White House, Diane Sawyer spoke to many of the key players throughout the week as part of ABC's special "Your Voice, Your Vote" coverage of the Republican National Convention. Sawyer spoke with Mitt and Ann Romney's five sons, Speaker of the House John Boehner, had an exclusive interview with Ann Romney in advance of her convention speech, and spoke with former Governor Jeb Bush.
