Should People Shoot Cellphone Video in Emergencies?

In the moments after the Boston Marathon bombings, many people ran away. Others helped the injured. Both are ancient and natural human reactions to calamity. Still others raised their cellphones and shot photos, and video, a new and growing reaction that technology and social media have created.

Is it cowardly? Stupidly reckless? Creepy and voyeuristic? Innocent? Or helpful, given the nascent phenomenon of crowd-sourced footage that aids police investigations?
