"World News with Diane Sawyer" the Only Newscast to Grow Audience Week-to-Week

Season-to-Date, "ABC World News" Posting Smallest Gaps with "NBC Nightly News" in 5 Years

ABC Slashes Total Viewing Gap with NBC by 24% and Demo Gap by 10%, Season-to-Date

For the week of June 17, 2013, which saw newscasts pre-empted in parts of the country due to sports coverage, "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" averaged 6.90 million Total Viewers and a 1.5 rating/7 share/1.73 million in Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research. "World News" was up over the previous week in both measures - 6.80 million and 1.71 million, respectively, on w/o 6/10/13. In fact, "World News" stood as the only evening newscast to grow over the prior week as both "CBS Evening News" (-3%/-9%) and "NBC Nightly News" (-7%/-15%) each posted losses. Further, both "CBS Evening News" (1.337 million) and "NBC Nightly News" (1.901 million) each turned in their smallest Adult 25-54 performance in more than 21 years - since before the 1991-92 season; Nielsen's electronic database started on September of 1991.

For the 2nd time in the last 3 weeks, "World News" ranked No. 1 on Friday (6/21/13) among both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54, topping NBC's "Nightly News" by +63,000 Total Viewers (6.564 million vs. 6.501 million) and by +75,000 Adults 25-54 (1.741 million vs. 1.666 million). Further, "World News" has ranked No. 1 on Friday in the key adult news demo in 5 of the last 7 weeks .

"World News" slashed its week-to-week margins with "NBC Nightly News" by more than half among both Total Viewers (-52%, 626,000 vs. 1.31 million) and Adults 25-54 (-68%, 172,000 vs. 534,000). "World News" delivered its closest news demo performance with the NBC program in nearly 3 months - since w/o 3/25/13.

For the 4th time in the last 5 weeks, "World News" cut its year-to-year margins with "NBC Nightly News" by double-digits among Adults 25-54 (-33%, 172,000 vs. 256,000).

Season-to-date, "World News" has increased its Total Viewing audience (+3%) compared to the same point last season, drawing its 5- since the 2010-11 season. "World News" narrowed its margins with "NBC Nightly News" by double-digits among both Total Viewers (-24%) and Adults 25-54 (-10%) to post its smallest margins (777,000 and 318,000, respectively) with the NBC program in 5 years - since the 2007-08 season.

For the week, "World News" beat "CBS Evening News" by 1.262 million Total Viewers and by 392,000 Adults 25-54 . In fact, "World News" led the CBS program by its largest news demo margin in 1 1/2 years - since w/o 12/19/11.

Note : Due to the NBA Finals Game 6 on Tuesday (6/18/13) and Game 7 on Thursday (6/20/13), "World News" was retitled "Wrld News Tonite" and the telecasts were excluded from the averages. In addition, "NBC Nightly News" was retitled "NBC-Nitely-News" on Wednesday (6/19/13) and the telecast was excluded from the averages. ABC's weekly average is based on three days (Mon, Wed and Fri), NBC's weekly average is based on four days (Mon-Tues and Thurs-Fri) and CBS' weekly average is based on five days.
