Season-to-Date, "World News" Posting Smallest Gaps with NBC in 5 Years

For the first six months of 2013 "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" averaged 7.76 million Total Viewers and a 1.7 rating/7 share/2.00 million among Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research. "World News" improved among both Total Viewers (+4%) and Adults 25-54 (+2%) versus the first six months of 2012 - 7.46 million and 1.97 million, respectively. In fact, "World News" stood as the only evening news program to post increases in both measures compared to "CBS Evening News" (+8%/-1%) and "NBC Nightly News" (up less than 1%/-2%).

Calendar-year-to-date, "World News" cut its margins with "NBC Nightly News" by double-digits among both Total Viewers (-26%, 781,000 vs. 1.05 million) and Adults 25-54 (-21%, 293,000 vs. 371,000) compared to its margins with the NBC program at the same point last year.

During the first half of 2013, "World News" beat the "CBS Evening News" by 1.19 million Total Viewers and by 227,000 Adults 25-54 viewers. "World News" widened its news demo lead over the CBS program by +26% compared to the first half of 2012 (180,000).

During the 2nd quarter of 2013 "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" averaged 7.25 million Total Viewers and a 1.6 rating/7 share/1.85 million among Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research. "World News" saw its Total Viewer audience grow over the year-ago quarter by +2% (7.08 million for 2Q12)

For the 2nd year in a row, "World News" narrowed its year-ago 2nd quarter margin with "NBC Nightly News" in Total Viewers (-3%, 786,000 vs. 807,000 for 2Q12) to post its closest 2nd quarter performance with NBC in 3 years - since 2Q10.

For the 2nd quarter, "World News" beat the "CBS Evening News" by 1.12 million Total Viewers and by 258,000 Adults 25-54 viewers, leading the CBS program by its largest quarter margin in the demo in 6 quarters - since 4Q11.

For the week of June 24, 2013, "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" averaged 6.66 million Total Viewers and a 1.5 rating/7 share/1.76 million in Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research. "World News" improved its Adults 25-54 performance for the 2nd week in a row (+2% - 1.73 million on w/o 6/17/13) to post a 4-week high - since w/o 5/27/13.

For the 2nd week in a row, "World News" narrowed its margins with "NBC Nightly News" versus the previous week by double-digits among Adults 25-54 (-41%, 101,000 vs. 172,000). In fact, "World News" saw its smallest news demo gap with the NBC program in 3 months - since w/o 3/25/13.

"World News" slashed its year-to-year Adults 25-54 margin with "NBC Nightly News" by more than three-quarters (-78%, 101,000 vs. 453,000) . In addition, the ABC newscast cut its Total Viewer gap from the year-ago week with "Nightly News" by -7% (805,000 vs. 862,000).

Season to date, "World News" has increased its Total Viewing audience (+3%) compared to the same point last season, drawing its most-watched season in 2 years - since the 2010-11 season. "World News" narrowed its margins with "NBC Nightly News" among both Total Viewers (-22%) and Adults 25-54 (-9%) to post its smallest margins (785,000 and 315,000, respectively) with the NBC program in 5 years - since the 2007-08 season.

For the week, "World News" beat "CBS Evening News" by 594,000 Total Viewers and by 245,000 Adults 25-54 .

Note : On Monday (6/24/13), "NBC Nightly News" was retitled "NBC-Nitely-News" and the telecast was excluded from the averages. NBC's weekly average is based on four days (Tues-Fri), while ABC's and CBS' weekly averages are based on five days.
