Today marks six years since a brutal home invasion during which a woman and her two daughters were killed in Connecticut.

Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 48, and her daughters, 17-year-old Hayley and 11-year-old Michaela, were killed during a July 23, 2007, home invasion carried out by Steven Hayes and Joshua Komisarjevsky.

Hawke-Petit was raped and strangled. Her daughters were tied to their beds and died when the house was set on fire.

Hawke-Petit's husband and the girls' father, Dr. William Petit, was the only member of his family to survive the attack.

Brutally beaten with a baseball bat and left bound in the basement of his home, he managed to escape to a neighbor's house.

Hayes and Komisarjevsky were convicted and sentenced to death.

The Petit Family Foundation held its annual golf tournament Monday to remember the victims.

The event was at the Country Club of Farmington in Farmington, Conn.

The Petit Family Foundation is a charitable organization that aims to honor Hawke-Petit and the Petit daughters by raising funds to foster youth education, especially for women in the sciences, as well as to improve the lives of people affected by chronic illness and those affected by violence.

Dr. Petit has since remarried. He wed photographer Christine Paluf Aug. 5, 2012.
