3 Money-Saving Tips to Follow Before You Head to the Mall

ABC News' Paula Faris reports:

With no coupons or advertisements in hand and without signing up for a single charge card, several New Jersey moms were able to walk out of a New Jersey mall recently with bags full of bargains.

"I saved $25!" Erin Ellis said.

And the ABC News "Real Money" team and contributor - and negotiation expert - Tory Johnson were there to help.

Johnson shared the following tips with the mothers:

1. Negotiate. Ask for a discount right away and found out whether it can be combined with a second coupon. Even if you get refused, ask for the store's manager. When Johnson asked to see the manager about a mail-in coupon she hadn't received, the manager let her use it anyway on a brand-new jacket.

"It's all about using your voice!" Johnson said.

In the end, Johnson paid $5.44 for the $25 jacket. And at another store, she was given $10 off a pair of sneakers.

2. Use apps like Shopular , which recognizes where you are and pulls up deals and exclusive coupons, as well as RedLaser .

3. Shop on Thursday and Friday for the best deals.

"Sales associates are aware of what's going to be going on sale that coming weekend," Johnson said. "So they might tip you off or give you an advanced discount on things because you're here today."
