"World News" Has Slashed News Demo Margin with NBC by Double-Digits Versus Year-Ago Week in 6 of Last 7 Weeks

Week of November 25, 2013

For the week of November 25, 2013, "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" averaged 9.038 million Total Viewers and a 1.9 rating/6 share/2.323 million in Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research. Growing over the previous week (8.247 million and 2.046 million on w/o 11/18/13) for the 2nd week in a row in both Total Viewers (+9%) and Adults 25-54 (+14%), "World News" hit season highs in both Nielsen measures. In fact, hitting a season high in Total Viewers for the 4th consecutive week, "World News" attracted its largest overall audience in more than 2 1/2 years - since w/o 1/31/11.

"World News" posted year-to-year gains in Total Viewers (+8%) and Adults 25-54 (+6%) - 8.388 million and 2.183 million, respectively, on w/o 11/26/12. In addition, "World News" stood as the only evening newscast to grow its news demo performance on the year-ago week as both "CBS Evening News" (-6%) and "NBC Nightly News" (-1%) were down.

On Monday (11/25/13) "World News" delivered its top telecast of the season in both Total Viewers (9.231 million) and Adults 25-54 (2.343 million). In fact, the Monday broadcast stood as "World News'" most-watched telecast in 7 months - since 4/15/13.

"World News" narrowed its Adults 25-54 margin with "NBC Nightly News" from the year-ago week by -37% (267,000 vs. 422,000). Further, "World News" has slashed its news demo margin with "Nightly News" by double-digits versus the year-ago week in 6 of the last 7 weeks.

Season to date, "World News" is up versus the same point last season in Total Viewers (+2%), delivering its most-watched season in 5 years - since the 2008-09 season. In addition, "World News" has narrowed its season margin with "NBC Nightly News" in Adults 25-54 by double-digits (-23%) compared to its season margin at the same point last year. In fact, "World News" is posting its smallest news demo margin (271,000) with the NBC program in 5 years- since the 2008-09 season.

For the week, "ABC World News" beat the "CBS Evening News" by 1.607 million Total Viewers and by 494,000 Adults 25-54. "World News" scored its largest Total Viewer margin over the CBS program in 11 weeks - since w/o 9/9/13.

November 2013 Sweep

For the November 2013 sweep, "ABC World News with Diane Sawyer" delivered 8.237 million Total Viewers and a 1.7 rating/6 share/2.050 million among Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research.

For the 3rd November in a row, "ABC World News" cut its Adults 25-54 sweep gap with "NBC Nightly News" from the year-ago sweep (-26% - 294,000 vs. 398,000), turning in its smallest news demo margin with the NBC program for a November sweep in 5 years - since November 2008.

"World News" was up by double-digits versus the previous sweep (7.035 million and 1.818 million - July 2013) in Total Viewers (+17%) and Adults 25-54 (+13%) .

"World News" led CBS' "Evening News" by 944,000 Total Viewers and by 260,000 Adults 25-54 viewers during the November 2013 sweep, seeing its strongest news demo lead for a November in 3 years - since November 2010.

NOTE: ABC's and CBS' weekly averages are based on two days (Mon-Tue), while NBC's weekly average is based on four days (Mon-Wed and Fri). "World News" was coded special on Wednesday and Thursday due to Thanksgiving. On Friday, "World News" was coded special but aired only on the West Coast and therefore we will not see ratings for that day. In addition, NBC's "Nightly News" was coded special on Thursday and CBS' "Evening News" was coded special on Wednesday and Friday, and aired only on the West Coast on Thursday. All specials are excluded from the weekly averages.
