Sure, suitcases, wallets and keys have accidentally been left behind in rental cars, but a rifle?

Lauren Tannehill, the wife of Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill, left an AR-15 rifle in the backseat of a rental car earlier this month, according to an incident report from the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

Hours after Tannehill returned a 2013 Nissan Rogue to E-Z Rent-A-Car in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the vehicle was rented out to a New York woman who later found the assault rifle secured in the backseat, authorities said.

The gun was turned over to authorities on Jan. 6. Authorities said they determined the firearm was legally owned and left behind by accident.

It was unclear whether Tannehill had picked up the gun from authorities, who wrote in the report that the owner had been notified to follow up with the Hillsboro Beach Police Department.

A spokesperson for the Miami Dolphins told ABCNews.com that the Tannehills consider the incident a "personal matter" and would not be releasing a statement.

Tannehill, a model, has previously posted pictures to social media of her and her quarterback husband shooting guns.
