Cops Seek Bad Witch Who Stole Ruby Red Slippers

It was just after 2 a.m. Saturday in a Staten Island Hilton Garden Inn when a well-dressed woman removed a pair of replica "Wizard of Oz" Ruby Red Slippers from a display case and fled.

Police are trying to identify the thief. The hotel's owner told the Staten Island Advance the slippers were purchased in Paris, are worth $2,500 and were meant to remind guests "there's no place like home."

According to the Smithsonian, several pairs of slippers were made for the 1939 movie and they have a pair that were donated anonymously in 1979. "The slippers are one of the most asked about artifacts at the Smithsonian," the museum says on its website.

The hotel released this surveillance image of a suspect in the case of the missing ruby red slippers.
